Baseball: Hawks finish 1-2 in the Lockhart Tournament

The Canyon Lake Hawks continue their tough stretch against bigger schools, as they finished with one win and two losses last week at the Lockhart tournament.

The Hawks started the tournament with their only win as they crushed Austin Lanier.

Canyon Lake finished with 12 hits in the game and kept the pressure on with good plate appearances from the whole team.

The hitting was led with Junior Jeff Nabors garnering three hits (two doubles), driving in two.

Michael Brady continued his hot streak getting two hits on two official at bats and Logan Felch belting the first home run of the season scoring three.

Daniel Camarillo, Nabors, and Sophomore Travis Walker each crossed the plate three times, while Zach Jenkins also finished with three RBI’s.

Nabors was also on the mound pitching the four inning game and giving up only three hits, all singles.

The Hawks also improved their fielding with only two errors….contrast that with the eight errors in the first game with Marble Falls and you can deduce that the coaches might not be ecstatic with the two errors, but when you contrast the first game, then the improvement had to lead to a softer pillow for a good nights sleep.

Kyle Lehman 7 CLHS Hawks 4

The second game of the Lockhart tournament did not end well as Lehman scored three runs in the sixth inning to put enough distance as they held off the Hawks for the 7-4 win.

The Hawks found themselves up 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the wheels fell off the cart and Lehman rallied to tie the score.

Canyon Lake had three of their six hits for doubles, but with only three walks, they could not muster enough base runners to maximize their scoring opportunities.

The Hawks continued to play the 4A schools tough which can only help when the district games start later in March.

Hawks Lose another Squeaker in Final Game

Canyon Lake could not hold onto the lead after racing out to a six run advantage in the second inning. The host Lockhart Lions finally caught the Hawks in the final inning after trailing the whole game.

The Hawks are finding out that every inning counts and their resolve must last a bit longer to turn the last two losses into wins. This was the fourth consecutive 4A classification the Hawks had faced for the season.

CLHS had their lowest hit total of the year, but with seven walks the Hawks were able to forge into the six run advantage in the second inning.

The Lions started chipping away at the lead via the gopher ball. Four of the Lions homeruns scored all the runs but one in the game.

The Hawks had their best chance to increase the lead in the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded while holding onto a one run lead.

Canyon Lake did get a timely double play ball in the bottom of the sixth inning preserving the one run lead. After giving up a lead off walk, Jeff Nabors struck out the next batter as Travis Walker threw out the base runner trying to steal second on the play.

The Hawks will continue their 4A/5A run of competition this next week as they play Buda Hays—Boerne Champion—Killeen Ellison—and finishing with 5A San Antonio Reagan. No, we did not forget the Hawks will also have a game with Austin St. Edwards a division 1 TAPPS school.
