Canyon Lake Softball Starts Season Strong

The Canyon Lake Hawks have started a new campaign on a winning note, showing no mercy to the Lago Vista Vikings taking a 10 run rule into effect last Tuesday night at the Hawk’s diamond.

Missy Romero started the season throwing a two hitter and striking out eight Vikings.

“I felt more relaxed as the game continued,” Junior Pitcher Romero said. “We have a different attitude and a different want
this year.”

The Softball game made a major rule change for this season when they moved the pitching circle back three feet the same as the College game.

“I have been practicing from that distance since the Summer,” Romero added.

The Softball game has been dominated by pitching, since the circle has been so close to home plate. The batters have had
little chance of connecting with the ball based on how fast the ball was crossing the plate.

This one rule change will result in more scoring for both teams. The Hawks responded with 12 runs on 12 hits in the game….the Hawks only scored that many runs two times last season, giving you an idea of the offense you will see for this year.

Romero was so dominating, that her strikeout numbers would of been much higher playing three feet closer.

Their will be changes for the defensive part of the game also, especially as the girls get the bat on the ball more often giving
the fielders more chances to make plays.

The Hawks finished with no errors, but were sloppy in the field on several plays giving Coach John Gallagher enough ammo for the practices as the season continues.

The top half of the lineup finished with a .500 batting average with a double from (Katy Payne) and (Missy Romero). They also
accounted for six of the runs.

“We have worked on the hitting a lot,” Coach Gallagher said. The Hawks continue this week in the Navarro tournament, where they will continue finding the strengths for the team to improve for this season.”
