Take me out to the Ball Game

The Canyon Lake Baseball team is getting ready to pitch-off their season next Tuesday night against Marble Falls.

Before that happens the team has played two scrimmages and are in the process of finding which players they can go into battle with.

One thing is certain. The Hawks will be a young team.

“We are playing a lot of Sophomores,” Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We had the second base, center field, catcher, pitcher, and right field as sophomores at some time in the game tonight.”

The Hawks have not had a lot of time playing under the sun the past few days with the cold weather presenting a problem in getting some meaningful practice in.

Against Seguin the Hawks had trouble holding onto the ball and committed multiple errors. The result gave more at bats for the visitors in the middle part of the game and put the Hawks in catch-up mode for the remainder of the scrimmage.

The pitching was decent and should give the team some confidence as the season gets going.

The scrimmage went for 10 innings allowing the coaches to see four different pitchers.

The team gave up more than 10 runs, but with more practice playing defense will help bring those numbers down.

The Hawks got rolling in the third inning when they were able to bunch six hits, which allowed the Canyon Lake to score five runs.

The scrimmage changed at bats after five runs in the inning. Daniel Camarillo showed a lot of promise belting a double on the first at bat of the game. He finished with three hits on the cold night.

Michael Brady had the big hit when he belted a double to the right field fence clearing the bases for the Hawks.

As bad as the defense played for most of the game, the infielders did turn two double plays showing some promise.

“It was a very cold night which makes it hard to grip the ball,” Dunavant surmised. “The good news is that we did not walk any batters and the pitchers need to realize that high school players can find more ways to make an out when we just make our pitches.”
