Baseball: CLHS loses first District game, 4-1

The Hawks started the district on the short end last Tuesday night when they lost to the Bandera Bulldogs after their bats went silent.

The Bulldogs pitcher struck out 11 Hawks in the game snuffing out any rallies that the Hawks might have started.

Errors were also a bug-a-do, when a routine grounder made it to the outfield scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Of the four runs scored by the visitors only one of the runs was earned.

The Hawks struck back in the bottom of the third when the pitcher, Daulton Winters had the first hit in the game leading off the inning. After a strike out a hot hitting Daniel Camarillo hit a gapper into right field for a triple and scoring the one and only run of the game.

Camarillo was left stranded when the next two Canyon Lake batters struck out.

The Hawks could not get enough base runners as they drew only two walks to go with the four hits.

The good news? Pitcher Daulton Winters, who had been nursing a turned ankle from the basketball season saw his first extended action on the mound. The left hander was able to pick off three base runners helping his cause.

“We started Daulton Winters because he could control base runners,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “He worked some ground balls and that is why we had him playing, because he is a senior and he could keep us in the game.”

“Zach Jenkins kept us in the ball game too,” Dunavant finished.

The Hawks picked off five total in the game. Zach Jenkins contributed two pick offs during his stint on the mound in the later innings.

Canyon Lake has five Sophomores on the roster and all of the players start, telling how young the team is and making the consistent plays you get from older players.

“We have to learn to put games like this behind us,”Trent Dunavant said. “This was the first district game for many of the players and they need to put more on the line when district season starts.”

The Hawks will play in their final tournament this week end as district goes full tilt the next week.

The Llano tournament is peppered with several teams from the same district as the Hawks which will help in giving the team a good idea of what needs to be done in order to get things on track for the most important part of the season.
