Hawks lose to Marion, 9-8

imageThe Canyon Lake Hawks are still looking for the right mojo as District play gets going in earnest.

The Marion Bulldogs persevered in their win over the Hawks last Saturday at the Hawk diamond. The game got away from Canyon Lake in the last inning when the Hawks had two costly errors allowing the winning run to cross the plate.

“You can’t give the other team two extra outs in an inning,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “These are still young guys that are put in pressure situations and the game is just not on automatic pilot for them yet.”

The Hawks scored first in the second inning with three hits, Kyler Huff and Zach Jenkins were the two players that initiated the runs with timely hits and stealing bases to keep the pressure on the Bulldogs.

The lead did not last, however as the Bulldogs answered with six runs in the top of the third inning. The pitcher, Logan Felps threw 41 pitches in the inning and the Hawks had that ‘ugly’ word again (error) that allowed the inning to go much longer than it needed.

Marion had a homerun after the error that gave the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.

Canyon Lake was not finished either, when they answered with five runs in the bottom of the same inning to take the lead back.

Right fielder Daniel Camarillo started the inning with a single. Daulton Winters and Logan Felch both worked walks to load the bases for Travis Walker.

McIntosh greeted the pitcher with a double and scoring the go ahead run for the good guys.

The Hawks scratched across another run in the fifth inning when Huff started with another walk and scored on a hit by Jenkins, his third hit of the game.

“These players were playing on Monday nights last year,” Dunavant stated. “That makes a big difference in the importance of the game and the pressure they find themselves in.”

“We are still throwing strikes and we did like what we saw with the two double plays in the game,” Dunavant finished.

The Hawks will now need to graduate sooner than they might have wanted too, but the simple fact is they don’t have a choice and the next few games will let them know where they stand for the District and Playoffs.

Canyon Lake will play at 4pm at Navarro this Tuesday and then return home with a game against the Boerne Greyhounds this Friday at 6:30pm.
