Softball: Hawks lose Heartbreaker, 2-0 to Bandera

The Canyon Lake Hawks lost their first district game last Friday against the Bandera Bulldogs, 2-0.

When asked Head Coach John Gallagher the one word description of the game…..
“Heartbreaker”, he said.

The pitching dual was on, starting in the first inning as the Hawk’s Missy Romero and Amber Neal from Bandera set the stage. The two pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts and walked only four hitters.

Both teams garnered just eight hits and the unfortunate errors cost the Hawks dearly, when both runs scored on an error that made it to the outfield on an attempted steal.

The damage was done and Canyon Lake could not get that one timely hit to keep the game going, after loading the bases twice in the game.

The Hawks made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with just one out. The meat of the order was coming to the plate, but the end result was strikeouts and the eventual game.

Bandera and CLHS both entered the game undefeated in District 26-3A, after winning their games on Tuesday. The game might be a rematch for district next time they meet, as the Hawks did out hit their opponent.

Pitching is still the major ingredient for having a chance for a win and with the battery of Romero and Katy Payne, the team will always be in the games. The result of the errors were devastating but the good news was that the Hawks reduced the number of errors by four between the two district games.

The chances were there for getting some runs, it just was not meant to be on this night. The difference between the two years is still remarkable and the heartbreaking loss can be remedied.

The Bulldogs Neal is a quality pitcher and earlier in the year, the game would not of been this competitive. The improvement will result in wins….

“We will comeback next week and work on the things we did not accomplish tonight,” Coach John Gallagher said. “We could not take advantage when we had the chance.”

The Hawks will play next Friday at 3pm at the Hawk stadium against Wimberley, come out and get a sun tan so you can be a ‘heart breaker’ when school starts back, as your Hawks break a Texans heart.
