Hawks Softball Win Third Straight over Boerne, 6-0
Canyon Lake whitewashed the Boerne Greyhounds in a win that helped cement the Hawks into second place in the District 26-3A race last Friday night at the Canyon Lake diamond.
Pitcher Missy Romero helped the Hawks win their third game in a row and also winning their second straight over the Greyhounds.
Canyon Lake has now scored 29 runs In the last three games helping take a lot of pressure off the defense. The bottom of the batting order were the players that raised the bar for this win.
Sophomore McKenna Beseda responded with a three hit night helping the Hawks stake the momentum and game.
Couple that with sophomore Lilimae Daily double for knocking in the first run, Daily finished with two hits for the Hawks.“I have been following the coaches instructions and relaxing my hands and getting on top of the ball,” First baseman Daily said. “It was good that we got together and got to start it off.”
Canyon Lake was holding onto a 2-0 lead when the Greyhounds loaded the bases without a hit. Romero’s only walk followed by a fielders choice and a hit batsman gave Boerne it’s best chance to do damage.
“Oh! Goodness what have I got us into,” Pitcher Romero exclaimed. “We have to get outs.”
“The defense have worked hard,” Romero continued. “That gives me more confidence in myself.”
After a short convention at the mound, Romero proceeded to strike out the side and douse Boerne’s chance to do damage.
The bottom of the fifth inning the Hawks put the game out of reach with seven of the eight batters having productive at bats.
Beseda started the inning off with a single, then Vicky Henderson followed suit with a single putting runners at the corners.
Enter second baseman Alex Henderson with a squeeze play plating the first run. Center fielder Tiffany Arrrrrrrrredondo (via, Stephanie Langenberg voice here) singled knocking in another run.
Romero walked allowing Senior Katy Payne to get her second hit of the game, beating the throw for the infield single. Caroline Jordan brought the fourth and final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field.
“Now it is time to go after Fredericksburg and Bandera,” Romero said intently.
“We have been preaching for the team to be aggressive,” Head Coach John Gallagher said while talking about the offensive output the past three games. “We have to do a lot mentally for the next two games…..the girls still remember the Bandera game and the way the game ended….they talk about it everyday.”
The cement is not set yet for the Hawks as they have a chance to make a run for Bandera. The next two games are on the road and will give Canyon Lake a chance to improve on their status.
