A Look at District 26-3A Football Schedules

The ReSporter would like to take a look at the teams and what their football record was in comparison to the rest of the District. The records were only based on the team played in the regular season.

Canyon Lake played a 14-1 Wimberley team and so that was the number used for strength of schedule. The playoffs however were not calculated, so the 8-3 record of Burnet was not used nor was the Somerset record.

So each team will have a different number of games in the formula, but if the team played opponents that went far in the playoffs for their regular season game, then their record would reflect that calculation.

Teams           W   L   Pct.
Bandera        70  46  .603
Fredericksburg 68  47  .591
Navarro        62  56  .525
Canyon Lake    59  54  .522
Wimberley      46  61  .429
Boerne         48  64  .428

The above numbers would give you an idea of how hard the schedule played out for each team. One of the problems with the standings would be the individual record for each team.

Once again, if you are Wimberley and you inflicted 14 wins on the opposition, then those wins would hurt your overall percentage.

The next set of numbers are based on taking the actual games that were played against each individual team. So, if Wimberley beat Boerne the record for the Texans would be adjusted down one loss imposed on the Greyhounds.

The ReSporter still sees some of you scratching your heads. Maybe this will make it simpler. Take the Canyon Lake record, since the Hawks finished with a 6-6 record, then their percentage would stay the same. Subtract the six losses and six wins from the record and you still have the virtual same percentage.

Make sense? This would be a more real idea of the strength of schedule and record without counting the teams that played. It is unfair for the teams that finished with a good record because it takes away from their real numbers. Bandera gave each team they played a win and Wimberley gave each team a loss on their record.

Here is what each team’s record would be with this new formula.

Teams           W   L    Pct.
Bandera        60  46   .566
Fredericksburg 59  46   .562
Navarro        60  48   .556
Canyon Lake    54  49   .524
Wimberley      46  51   .474
Boerne         42  60   .412

Now you can see that Bandera played a much tougher schedule and their record would also reflect that prognosis. Fredericksburg was not that far behind.

Wimberley played a couple of 0-10 teams on their schedule and suffered because of that. Boerne had the weakest schedule by far and still finished with a losing record.

Granted the numbers above can still be massaged some. For instance, Navarro played a 2A team that finished 14-1 for the season. The team beat them, but I would suggest that Wimberley would of beaten that same team since they beat Navarro twice.

Bandera was winless and played the toughest schedule, but Region IV is weak south of San Antonio and a lot of those records were inflated with the water downed teams they played.

So you will have to give a little, even with the standings above, but for a number of people the formula is still a great indicator on how the season played out and how the teams finished.
