Elijah Montgomery has the ‘it’ factor going for him. These are the lofty words from Offensive Line Coach Charles Wallen said about this young man.

“Montgomery is the total package,” Coach Wallen exclaimed. “He is quick and strong and he is also a leader and very aggressive.”

Where Wes Dicks has size, Montgomery has a ton of ‘it’. You know the phrase….as you look at the game and watch the players during the game and you will notice certain players that have that intangible.

Montgomery started last year as a Junior and he will also bring experience to the table this season.

“We need clear eyes and full hearts,” Montgomery said stoically. “The clear eyes represents our focus and our heart  is in believing we will win in everything. If we can do that then we can’t lose.”

This is the type of experience the players can rally around. You have heard it said that the offensive line is the veins for the offense. The full hearts that Montgomery talked about can only accentuate that idea.

Montgomery was asked how he was going to approach this coming season.

“Be fearless, just because some teams might be ranked does not mean they are better than us,” Montgomery said confidently. “We can’t underestimate our opponents, we dominated Burnet, but we had too much confidence for Somerset.”

Montgomery continued, “We have to be confident, but we can’t be boastful.”

Canyon Lake has another lineman that is excited about the upcoming campaign, especially playing on the offensive line.

“I like playing the line because I can get down and dirty,” Montgomery said. “The line is where all the foundation is, if you are a lineman then we know we are strong by how the running backs and quarterbacks are doing. Besides, I can legally hit someone……”

The line did not start as strong as they needed to last season, hence the record and the inconsistent offensive numbers during those games. The ReSporter asked the stalwart lineman how they can avoid that same type of start this next season.

“The start of last year we were real young,” Montgomery finished. “The nerves and force of the game needed to be reckoned with. So, we need to start with more confidence. We can do that by being coaches on the field and make sure the younger players are not nervous and that we got their back.”

Coach Wallen closed saying, “Montgomery is a guy you can go to the hole with!”

Another testament to give the fans more to look for in the games. You are learning about players that don’t get much recognition, but this is a group of men that are wearing pride on the outside of their jersey.
