Canyon Lake Volleyball Prepares for Season Opener

The Canyon Lake Volleyball team will soon be back on the court, preparing for another run in district play.

This will be the fourth year of varsity competition and the Hawks have a streak of two year running in the playoffs. The Volleyball team was the first team sport to qualify for the playoffs two years ago and the breakthrough broke the dam at Canyon Lake, with several teams now putting up their skins on the walls.

The Hawks have a three year record of 51-61 as they inch towards the .500 record.

Canyon Lake holds a winning record at home the last two years, when complete records started being kept. The coaches, for obvious reasons, had more important issues when they were playing older teams with Sophomores and Juniors in the beginning.

Since 2009 season the Hawks are 20-12 at home and have a 24-23 record on the road.

Canyon Lake will have to fill some lofty records from the previous year. Tira Chalk, Katy Payne, and Tiffany Tschoepe all ended with 178 or more kills. Chalk hit (literally) 428 in the 112 games that were played.

All three of the girls were Seniors and will be sorely missed this coming campaign. There are several other players who will be ready to step up and fill this valuable role.

Megan Browning finished with 846 assists last season and will be joining Chalk in the college ranks this new year.

Katy Payne led the team with 459 digs, followed closely by Alex Henderson (359), Browning (190), and Tschoepe with 124. Only Missy Romero had triple digits in digs with 143 who was not a Senior.

Coach Nicole Creek has her work cut out for her this season in order to get the Hawks vying for the District 26-3A crown.

The team might start off slower than the past two teams, but they certainly have a chance to reach the playoff goals by the end of the season. In Volleyball, the teams play several games at Tournaments, which gives the Coaches a chance to see what works and what type of rotation is needed.

Time will tell what is in store for this years team but this will not be a time to sell them short of the ultimate goals for this season.

The  following is the schedule for the next two weeks of the season with August 9th at Hawk Gym kicking off the season.
