Breaking down the Canyon Lake games

The ReSporter will be breaking down the game the next few days for the Canyon Lake Hawks football team. There will be three articles with the first two having three games each with the final having four.
The Hawks need to start the season on an upbeat performance against Blanco. The opening game loss last year is still a painful memory for Canyon Lake and the best way to get the taste out of their mouth would be a convincing win.
The offense was not hitting on all cylinders as the Panthers outgained the Hawks 340 yards to 189. You know the offense is not doing well when a running team out gains the Canyon Lake’s passing game by 87 yards.
The best accomplishment from the game was the emergence of Eduardo Covarrubias, running for the injured Zach Henshaw.
Canyon Lake’s defense almost kept the 27 yard touchdown run of Covarrubias hold up for the sophomore running back.
The Hawks will have Blanco at home and hopefully the game will be a win like the last time the contest was played on Hawk field.
The depth of Canyon Lake and a healthy Henshaw will go a long way in establishing the foundation needed for the Hawks to start the season 1-0.
CLHS has to improve how they play on the road and the next game against La Vernia will give you a good idea of how good the season can be.
La Vernia was another team that out gained the Hawks. The Bears were right at 100 yards more offense than than Canyon Lake.
Two things happened in the contest.
- The Hawks ran for 286 yards. Which was good…
- The Bears passed for 227 yards. Which was bad…
La Vernia was not noted as a passing team and the Hawks were still sputtering with the passing game.
This year, Canyon Lake will still have a quarterback with only their second start and how the team can control the running game might be just what the Doctor ordered.
Look for the Hawks to control the ground game allowing the home team with less time on the clock to stage enough momentum to overtake Canyon Lake.
The third game is the barometer game. How the Hawks play the Sealy Tigers, will give the team a good idea of what the year has a chance to morph into.
Last year, Sealy controlled the Hawks with a lock down defense, with a total of 75 yards for the game. The amazing thing, Canyon Lake was only down 12-6 going into the fourth quarter.
With six yards rushing and another subpar passing game the Hawks finally ran out of bullets and the Tigers used their top ten state ranking and running game for three unanswered touchdowns to finish the game.
Sealy should be ranked again this season and Canyon Lake will have a chance to give the region something to think about with a win.
How the offense plays will give the Hawks a chance, the team will have to be mistake free…while the defense will need to force turnovers like last season to keep the game close.
The Hawks will hopefully have all the kinks out of their offense with a quarterback playing in the third game.
The painful part of last season was the slow start and that is the one note you can take from the coaches and players. They have been working all summer to correct that glaring mistake from last season.
A 2-1 or 3-0 start would be a good feather to put in their hat.
Hopefully the feather will be the Hawk feather and the hat will be made of Panther, Bear, and Tiger hide.
