Canyon Lake prepares for second Scrimmage
The Canyon Lake Hawks will be performing in their second and final scrimmage Thursday in Hays at 5:30pm.
The Hawks will be playing the game during the heat of the day in preparation for the start of the season the next week.
“We are giving the kids an opportunity to prove themselves,” Head Coach Matt Monzingo said. “This game will help them to be prepared.”
CLHS will be playing Lehman as the end of the strenuous work outs since the start of the month. Everything up to this point has been evaluating who made the best impression on the coaches for playing time.
The Hawks started practice with the offense being the more established of the two units, but the defense has been a good surprise.
“Defensively the coaches have more depth and the second and third player down will want some playing time,” Matt Monzingo continued. “We don’t drop off with our first and second players…it is just a number.”
It has been well chronicled on how the Hawks would have more depth and now the proof is in the pudding.
“We had a real good scrimmage last week and have a good idea of where we stand,” Coach Monzingo said. “We scripted every play last week so the plays were not based on the situation at that time.”
The next item Canyon Lake will have to find is the quarterback that replaces the departed Jeff Nabors.
“Brandon Berger has a year of confidence and Branson (Berger) does not have that yet,” Coach Monzingo volunteered. “They both have to be prepared…they work well together and I want be afraid to pull them out.”
The season is fast approaching as Canyon Lake prepares for the last hurdle as the team starts to prepare for Blanco.
See you at the game!!
