The Hawks drive 76 yards on nine plays with Henshaw gaining 37 yards and Casey Coffee rushing for 39 yards. Coffee had played only defense up to this game, but the injury to Eduardo Covarrubias had Coach Monzingo ordering Coffee for the night against the Rebels.

“It makes everybody feel better when you can come in and help out,” The inaugurated running back Coffee said. “It helps knowing you have guys that will be able to back you up.”

“This is the greatest feeling in the world,” Kyler Huff said. “The homerun I hit comes in second.”

Huff was speaking of the winning homerun he had this past spring for the Hawk baseball team.

Matt Noyola, then had the first interception of the year on Austin-Travis’ next drive. Noyola returned the INT,  40 yards to the Travis 20 yard line. Six plays and the Hawks were up 14-0 on the shortest drive of the year.

“I accomplished everything and did what coach (David Bentzen) said to do and that is how I got the interception,” Matt ‘the interceptor’ Noyola said. “Monday through Thursday we go through all the things we need to and then we can dominate on Friday.”

QB Branson Belcher found Matt Magness for a 14 yard strike on a third down play.

Next possession the CL Defense held and went ahead and blocked the Punt for good measure. This time the Hawks had to go 22 yards for the score. Belcher ran it in from seven yards out on another third down play.

The next mistake by the Rebels was not fielding the kick-off and Canyon Lake was eyeing the goal line again from the 24 yard line.

Two pass plays to Ryan Bustamante and a final strike to Magness from 25 yards had Canyon Lake with a gaudy 28-0 first quarter score. The Hawks did not even have 28 points in a game the first year the school started playing varsity games.

This team had done the onslaught in one quarter.

The good news is the Hawks were not finished.

In the articles for the first part in the season had been the word ‘finish’. Canyon Lake did not finish last year against Somerset and that game might be the ‘booster’ shot the Hawks can use for this whole season.

The offensive and defensive line controlled this game like the Rebels controlled the Hawks last year.

“We are working hard in practice and it feels good to dominate,” Tackle and Defensive End Michael Brady said.  “Never stop and don’t give up, we know we are strong and physical.”

Sophomore Justin Monfils brings youth to the team, “This is a lot faster than when I was a freshman last year…We want it all together, all the lineman are a brotherhood, we help each other and if we mess up, then they don’t get mad, but correct it and get it right next time.”

The game certainly motivated the players for their Summer work outs.

The second quarter kept the Hawks still taking advantage of the Rebels miscues. A fumble on their second play allowed the opportunistic Hawks to start on the 32 yard line this time.

Same result, except this time Henshaw had all but five yards of the drive, as he allowed a Coffee break and then finished the breakfast on thee plays for 31 yards.

CL started the next drive on their 42 yard line after the defense held the Rebels on 23 yards of offense before punting.

This drive was a flag contest. Both teams helped each other, but the mistake prone Rebels helped with a roughing the passer penalty giving the Hawks possession on their 34 yard line and first down.

Garrett Dove was the highlight play for this drive with a 20 yard catch to the one yard line. Belcher ran it in on the next play with still over three minutes to play in the half.

“I could of scored but I wanted to secure the ball,” Dove said with confidence. “I just didn’t want to take a chance for a turnover.”

After another defensive stop and a 45 yard punt had CL looking at 82 yards for a score.

Henshaw ran for 25 yards and later caught a perfectly executed screen play for 34 yards to the nine yard line. With just four seconds on the clock, kicker Jake Robinson was called upon for the 27 yard field goal.

Robinson has been perfect all year with his second field goal with out a miss and then having his automatic extra points now counting at 18 in a row for the season.

“I was having a real bad connection with my foot,” place kicker Robinson said. “But it felt great having a chance to catch my first ball and of course being perfect on the PAT.”

The game was at a resounding 45-0 score that had the Rebels ‘genuflecting’ as the Hawks went to the dressing room.

Canyon Lake has not had many games like this one in their short history, but one thing you can say about the team is CLASS. Taking knees and empting the bench and letting everyone play was a thing of beauty.

“I at least made yardage on my first carry,” Sophomore McGuire Johnson said sheepishly. “That defensive line was huge and I just had  to find a way around them.”

How the Coaches manage the game speaks volumes for the the respect the players learn and will take with them for future endeavors in life.

Canyon Lake is night and day in the past two years. The 4-0 start will continue to build confidence for this squad.

The Hawks would of had the Red Cross here in their ship, if there would of been any rain in the last 12 months to take care of the injuries the team has been through.

The depth of this team will be even better as players will come in and take the reigns without having any let down. As the season continues and players return, the Hawks will be ready to peak for the end of the season.

Hopefully more teams will be succumbing with each passing week.
