BCS Volleyball Aces are Wild, next stop Final Four

The Bracken Christian Warriors won an epic battle against San Antonio Lutheran in a five game set, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 24-26, and 15-7.

Head Coach Shaunna Teuton mentioned after the win on Tuesday that if Briana Martinez was able to suit up, then she was going to play and definitely serve.

“We knew what we had to do going into the fifth game,” Coach Teuton said. “I asked them (team) whoever wanted most….Bre (Martinez) was the momentum turner.”

Miss Martinez had spent some time during the week in the hospital.

“I did not have very much energy,” Martinez sighed. “Adrenaline kicked in and I knew I needed to get in a groove.”

The Coach for Lutheran tried to freeze Martinez twice during the eight point rally.

“I just have to think about how to do my form in my head,” Martinez served an ace. “It is all a mental game.”

The match had reached the fifth game when Martinez decided to unleash a barrage of aces on the Mustangs after coming back from two three point deficits to start the final stanza.

Martinez’s five of eight serves were aces as the Warriors took a commanding 11-7 lead and coasted to the win.

The last four points were Amanda Morgan kills with some well placed serves from Senior Payton Stanush.

BCS started strong with an eight point first game win and then after leading in the second game, SA Lutheran made their comeback and forged to a five point win to tie the set at one all.

Bracken once again responded with a nine point win to retake the lead, 25-16.

Senior Becky Korkosz was the main cog as her serves allowed the Warriors to increase the lead after the five point rally.

Korkosz had some aces up her sleeve too, with three during that stretch. The close game now had a more comfortable 17-10 lead.

“I was really hoping to keep my serves,” Korkosz served. “I got in a groove…I practice a lot and just take a deep breath so I can do my best.”

Middle blocker Bailey Beene had a spectacular block during this game which gave the Warriors the momentum needed to finish another game out.

The third game had BCS leading during most of the game except when it mattered as the Mustangs took a lead 23-22 and Bracken could not recapture the game, sending the team and crowd into one of the most exciting events in any sport…..the Sudden Death Fifth game.

“Oh dude,” Parker Bolton exclaimed when asked about what she was thinking when the match went to the fifth game. “We better win this game…”

That is when Lutheran got the first serve and worked the score to 4-0 before the lethal combo of Korkosz and Martinez could unleash their serves on the ‘Stangs.

“We needed to play our game,” Coach Teuton finished. “They stepped it up.”

The win now gives the Warriors a berth in the Final Four and a return to a place that the team has not needed a map to find in years past.

“We will treat everything the same,” Bolton finished when commenting on how the team will approach this next week. “We are going to work very hard so we can go all the way.”

This young team has Seniors to show enough players how to play card games with a lot of Aces.
