BCS Wins Statement Game, Beat Winston, 54-0

Bracken Christian made a big statement game on Friday night as they beat SA The Winston, 54-0 for the seventh ‘mercy’ game in a row this season at Warrior Stadium.

BCS held the leading rusher in the Nation to 64 yards on 15 carries. The Winston’s Wilkerson had over 400 yards rushing last week and only approached that number as he was walking back to his bus for the ride home.

“We thought we could slow him (RB Wilkerson) down,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said defensively. “We shut him down instead.”

Defense wins Championships and the Warriors proved on this night that they might have a better defense than the Championship season last year.

The Warriors gave up 48 points in their first game of the season and now have given up 38 points in their last seven games total.

** One third of the first downs BCS has given up this year were in the first game.
** 40% of the rushing yardage was in the first game.
** 43% of the passing yards was in the first game.
** 5 of the top 10 defensive games in Bracken’s history have been this season.
** 3 of the top 5 defensive rushing games have been this year.
** Those three teams above, have combined for a negative 63 yards rushing on 57 carries.
** Defense has given up 22 points in the first quarter, while the offense is scoring a little over three points per minute in that same stanza. Equates to 30 points per first quarter.

The shut down defense is suffocating and if their is a mistake in coverage, then the speed of this team will make up for it.

“We are getting better every week,” Coach Fields said. “Our quickness is what sets us apart.”

Offensively the Warriors had the ball six times and scored on every possession. Two drives took five plays for the good guys to go the distance. In fact, BCS had two times in the game where they faced a third down play.

Punter Kevin Knapick had some anxious moments with the opportunity to perform his first kick this year.

Recap for this game:
Offense>>Scored on every possession.
Passing Game>>Eight tries and eight completions for two touchdowns…
Running Game>>Eight rushes for over 24 yards per play and four touchdowns…
Special Teams>>Interception returned for a touchdown and just one miss from the bonus kick.
Defense>>The Winston was only good for one out of six fourth down conversions.
Defensive Game>>70 yards on the ground for a team that averages over 350 yards on the ground.

The Warriors had 20 extra yards gained for having two penalties for that same amount.

BCS is already not having anyone return punts so the offense can have more chances for yardage and plays.

Now the team can start having penalties so the Warriors can gain more yardage…this really works when a team decides against punting.

Their was one part of the game that put a damper on the evening. Arnold Adame was hurt on his only running play of the game. The run was for 15 yards, but the tackle brought down the Sophomore and hushed the crowd.

“Very costly win when you lose a player with Adame’s stature,” Coach Fields said solemnly. “He was really coming into his own this season.”

Here are some stats in tribute to Adame’s season:
Rushing: Six times for 92 yards. An average of 15.3 yards per touch.
Returned a kick-off for a touchdown.
Eleven receptions (leads the team) for 192 yards and eight touchdowns.
Eleven touchdowns and very few missed catches for the good guys.

Prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

Bracken Christian will be playing next Friday, on the road against Marble Falls Faith. The next home game will be November 4th, against Kerrville OLH.
