Canyon Lake Boys Basketball Sweep Gonzales

The Canyon Lake Hawks swept the Gonzales Indians with all three boy’s teams

from Freshman to Varsity this past Friday as the School gets geared up for their Christmas holidays.

Varsity won 39-30, Junior Varsity won 38-20, and the Freshman doubled up the Indians 43-21 and all three were under control from the second quarter on.

Freshman will be first on our trek of recaps.

Gonzales came out smoking and led after the first quarter, 12-9 over the Hawks after starting with a little over 30% shooting from the court.

Fans did not know that the 12 points scored by our visitors would not be matched for the next three quarters as Canyon Lake (8-2) held the Indians to nine points the rest of the way.

“Our energy level was not where it needed to be,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman surmised. “We had a different defense and by pressuring the ball we got back into the game.”

Canyon Lake outscored Gonzales 25 to 3 for the middle quarters as starters and bench players had little difference in their skill set as wave after wave of Hawks kept the Indians hiding in their TeePees.

“We started focusing and finishing our shots and playing better defense,” Guard Tommy Clark said. “A couple of times we were crowding the three point line, but we started passing the ball a lot and that helped.”

Garrett Winters was perfect from the field as he connected on all his shots from the field and free throw line for a 12 point night.

Every player had a positive contribution to the game, giving Gonzales no respite in having a chance for a comeback.

“We started locking in and paying attention to what our coach was going to do,” Zach Moss said. “We have been playing together since the sixth grade, but we might have come into the game big headed after we beat this team earlier this year…but then Coach Chapman got to us in the huddle.”

The rest was history and it repeated itself as the Freshman Hawks finished off the Indians 34-9 the next three quarters, leaving no doubt that they were the superior team.

The Canyon Lake Junior Varsity also put the clamp on Gonzales Indians starting in the second quarter holding the visitors scoreless in the stanza while scoring 6 points and leading at halftime, 15-8.

Andrew Riali shot four for seven from the field, finishing with 10 points rebounding from a 0fer in his previous game.

“I was getting better shots on offense,” Riali said. “We worked our press break down, in practice and it resulted in easy lay ups.”

Caleb Kreiger continues to anchor the middle of the Hawks offense and defense. Kreiger finished with a team high 14 points while also showing that he can drive to the basket and dish assists.

“I know when we are having trouble with the press that I can get the ball in the middle of the court and help the team,” Kreiger admonished. “When a defense starts making silly fouls, then I know that we can take advantage.”

Silly fouls come from a team that did not have an answer for the fluid playing of the Hawks scoring leader.

“As the game goes on the game can slow down for the team,” Head Coach David Bentzen said. “We are executing our offense, but the ball just isn’t going in.”

Coach Bentzen was responding to the poor shooting percentage Canyon Lake had for the game.

When asked if he was pleased with where the team is during this time of the year, Coach Bentzen responded, “By our record I feel we are doing well, and we are holding teams less than what they are averaging scoring.”

Taking the every other quarter mantra, the Hawks out distanced their counterpart, 20-3 and finished putting the Indians on the Reservation.

Canyon Lake Varsity 39 Gonzales 30

The Varsity followed the two previous game by applying a suffocating defense that found the hosts up 16-6 at halftime.

Gonzales did not match the eight points Canyon Lake (8-5) had scored in the first quarter until six minutes left in the third quarter of the game.

If you have been following the Hawks this season, then you would of noticed the

amount of shots that the Forwards were getting in the game.

A guard did not score until there was five minutes left before halftime, after a shot by Matt Magness.

Ancel Morel started the game and set the tone while driving to the basket and Branson Belcher added the ten foot jump shot as the two players supplied the scoring during the first quarter.

“I got a feel of the game coming off the bench,” Belcher said. “I noticed the post that I was going to guard and then I had a sense of what to do when I entered the game.”

“I went in confident and got a lot of good looks,” Morel said with resolve. “I was strong with the ball and I just executed.”

Canyon Lake’s defense continues to be the major constant as the season starts to mature. The Hawks are holding opposing teams to a 38 point average which should keep the team in most games.

Offense can come and go, but the one constant you can always rely on is defense.

“If we shot just 4 to 8% better, we would be winning by much more,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard quipped. “I’m proud of the way the team is playing and I knew our shooting percentage would be a problem this season…but when our defense is playing like they are, then I can work off that.”
