Canyon Lake Girls Win First District Game, 50-26
The Canyon Lake Girl’s Basketball team won their first district game in Bandera on Friday, 50-26, as Coach Mary Beth Gallagher emptied the bench in the runaway win.
“It was great to be at full strength again,” Head Coach Gallagher commented. “Everyone got involved which allowed us to see how we can play with a full bench.”
In a game played earlier this year at the Canyon Lake Tournament, the Hawks beat Bandera Bulldogs in a battle for third place. The score was 44 to 30, giving you the idea of how much CL has improved.
The main difference in the two games was the absence of Amber Ramsey her 12 rebounds and solid play with a new 1-2-2 defense.
“Having Amber (Ramsey) back on the bench gives us needed height to anchor our defense with Katie (Williams),” Coach Gallagher surmised. “Amber (Ramsey) also gave us some added points with five.”
In the game earlier with Bandera, the Hawks enjoyed a one point lead at halftime, but on Friday Canyon Lake did not allow the Bulldogs to get out of the dog run.
Going into halftime a 23-9 lead was enjoyed as Canyon Lake continued to add to their lead with a 24 point final demolition.
The Hawks were led in scoring by Hannah St. John 13 , Williams 12, and Amber West 10 points.
St. John had three shots from three point land while the team made five three pointers all-together in the game. The five treys were the most this season for the Hawks.
This win will now allow the Hawks a chance to find some momentum as they come home on January 3rd and battle a good SA Hawkins team.
“Hawkins has some quality wins this season,” Gallagher finished.
The season will depend on how well Canyon Lake can play with a full bench and try to find some chemistry between the players during this important stretch.
