The Canyon Lake Hawks (5-3), continued their stingy defense holding Lockhart Lions to 43 points and a wild win Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.
“This was a good win,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard said. “Lockhart is a lot better than their record shows.”
Brandon Berger was nails as he sank four free throws giving CL the lead, 45-43 and the Hawks lock-downed on Lockhart with a 15 point run to finish the game against the 4A squad.
Canyon Lake also held the Lions scoreless in the second quarter allowing a one point deficit to balloon to a 12 point lead at halftime, 28-16.
The Lions led by Westbrook and Kerr, started the second half cutting the lead to seven points starting the fourth quarter, 34-27.
Westbrook helped put Lockhart in the lead with four minutes left in the game after sinking eight free throws in the fourth quarter and forging a 43-39 lead.
“We have to adjust to how the game is being called,” Coach Maynard continued. “Defense is our focus and we need to limit team’s possessions.”
That is when Berger decided to put the team on his shoulders getting steals and making four free throws on one-and-ones and reclaiming the Hawk lead that would not be threatened.

“The crowd and atmosphere, that is when it is really important,” Senior Berger said. “I love the football aspect on playing down low….it comes down to who can finish.”
The 20 points in the fourth quarter was more than Canyon Lake had averaged for halves this season.
Branson Belcher also answered the bell with seven points during the final run while Carl Cook contributed with timely steals.
Canyon Lake will now ready themselves for their tournament as they prepare for a Friday game starting at 1:30pm.
