By looking at the stats for this game, you might wonder how Canyon Lake was even in the game, but not only were they in the game, but lost by only one point, in a heartbreaking loss at Wimberley.

Senior Caitlin Gillum last second shot rimmed out on a shot that would of sent the visiting crowd to their feet.

Canyon Lake took a 9-8 lead on a Amber Ramsey shot with 4:53 on the second quarter clock and held that lead until 5:19 in the fourth quarter.

In between that twilight zone, the Hawks lead by as many as nine points. The Hawks held the Texans to two points in the second quarter and used this quarter to forge into a seven point lead at intermission.

Wimberley started their comeback by sinking 12 of 14 free throws in the third quarter. The only shot made by the Texans was a three pointer.

Canyon Lake still enjoyed a five point lead after the quarter, when Katie Williams scored four points while blocking Wimberley shots on the other end of the court.

But the Hawks could not guard the free throw line as Wimberley scored nine of their 15 points in the fourth quarter via the charity stripe.

Wimberley scored 30 points in the second half and 21 of those points were not guarded as the Texans were deadly from the stripe.

With 2:32 left in the fourth quarter Williams drew her fifth foul and the Hawks were down 33-37.

Ramsey responded by pulling the Hawks within two, 35-37.

The next three points for Wimberley were freebies and with 1:31 still left on the clock and a five point deficit.

Ramsey scored again under the Hawks basket with 1:15, to bring the visitors comeback within three points.

Wimberley then turned the ball over with a travel call on their next possession with :54 seconds on the clock.

Gillum drew a foul after rebounding her own miss and was fouled on her next try underneath. The foul shots were good and Canyon Lake found themselves only two points from a win.

After two rare misses from the free throw line by Wimberley, the Hawks used two time outs in the last :30 seconds…this is when the heartbreak ended the game on a Gillum three pointer that hit every part of the rim and bounced out as the buzzer sounded.

Canyon Lake battled foul trouble for most of the second half, but the Hawk bench played admirably as Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher managed the chess pieces that gave CL their best chance for a win.

Junior Marissa Ellis was one of those players, as she finished with five points and six rebounds.

The Hawks finished under 30 percent from the field and only 50 percent from the charity stripe.

Any one of those numbers would not had to change much for the end result being in favor of Canyon Lake.

Ramsey’s 10 points and 11 rebounds a double-double was nails as teammate Gillum also had 10 rebounds and seven steals helped keep the upstart Hawks with some momentum for the rest of District play.

Next game will be at the Hawk Gym this coming Tuesday night…come out and plan enough time at Parziale’s Pizzeria and enjoy the game…who knows if you are one of the fifth callers or customer and mention this website, then you might have the opportunity to change your medium pizza for a Large Free Pizza.

Now go beat a Billie!!
