BCS Boys almost pull Upset over Waldorf, 40-36

The Bracken Warriors spotted State Ranked Austin Waldorf to 18 points to start the game before playing even steven the next three quarters.

“Tonight we played with the level of intensity we are capable of playing,” Head Coach James Johnson started.
It is a maturity thing and we had to prove it to ourselves.”

“When we have been beaten so much this season the guys (team) had a ‘we can do this’ after playing a solid second quarter.”

BCS decided to start playing with two seconds left in the first quarter as Conner Higgins sank a baseline floater to start the scoring.

“Coach (James Johnson) wanted to run a pick and row in the second half,” Senior Higgins said. “This year was a lot of fun and we thought we had a chance to make the playoffs.”

The second quarter was more of the same as the Warriors outscored their visitors 16-8 in the stanza that cut the lead to eight points.

Ty Zunker started the second half scoring a bucket that made the blow-out a wake-up and only needing six points to tie the score.

Waldorf did respond and distanced themselves from Bracken, but the Warriors knew the big bad Waldorf team could be beat…if only they could of started the game like they played the last three quarters, then the headline would of shocked the region.

Jordan McDaniel finished his career scoring 11 points while being joined in double figures by Higgins with 10 points all in the first half.

“We decided to run our game plan and started working on what we did in practice,” Senior McDaniel surmised. “We came in with nothing to lose and our execution got better in the second half.”

Jordan Rohlmeier played a solid game in the paint with 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Bracken has a lot of potential as they now think about what might be in store for next season.

A game where everyone was afraid the final score could of been, 72-8 based on a bleak first quarter, turned out to give the younger players a taste of accomplishment knowing they can play with the power teams.

Something to take into the off season, “We did not have consistency for the season, Coach Johnson finished. “We (Coaches) need to be more creative to do some things different and see if that helps.”
