Canyon Lake finished another disappointing season as the Hawks said good-bye to nine of the 12 players on this years edition after posting a hard fought loss to district champion Boerne Greyhounds.

The Hawks were ahead with five minutes left in the second quarter, 17-16, but that lead was lost after a Greyhound 9-0 run and an eight point halftime lead.

Boerne finished district with an unblemished record and Canyon Lake would need to have an overall perfect game to complete the upset bid.

“I’m very proud of the boy’s,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard started. “They could of gone out and choked it up and they didn’t.”

“This is the first team that left an impression with their defense and that focus helped the younger players in our program.”

Matt Magness finished the game with 20 points and finished his career as the all-time leading scorer for the Hawks with 555 points.

There were other players that also left their mark in the record books.

Kevin Nolan finished his career third in blocks and tied with teammate Ancel Morel.

“I had a lot of fun and had good experiences,” Nolan said.

Nolan also commented on his missed shot under the basket, “I got hit when I faded away on my shot, (Brandon) Berger missed his assist.”

Canyon Lake might have had a sad season, but the games were not a result of players taking anything to the locker room afterwards. This team had non stop energy and defensively had their best year.

The Hawks gave up 46.6 points per game which was 10 points lower than the previous best year in 2010.

Another Hawk that always gave it his all on the court was Senior Jason Wigginton, who did not have the height for playing underneath the basket, but was always in position for an offensive rebound.

“You’ve got to want it,” Wigginton said in responding to his tenacity on the boards. “Because I want the ball and it is all about positioning and timing.”

Wigginton responded to his last game at the Hawk gym, “I loved everybit of it, the practice, and I had lots of fun playing my heart out.”

That was the result for Canyon Lake..they left their ‘heart’ out on the court and that will always result in positive resolve for this season and for their future.

Good luck!!
