Canyon Lake Softball Blank Marion, 10-0
Canyon Lake started a new campaign in good shape as they whitewashed the Marion Bulldogs, 10-0 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Softball Field.
The top of the batting order was lethal as the Hawks had the first four batters reach base which resulted in a 60 pitch inning for Skylar Sullivan and six runs for Canyon Lake.
Mary Caroline Jordan started the frame with a single followed by a walk for McKenna Beseda. Missy Romero would not succumb to Sullivan as she worked the pitcher for 10 pitches and a walk to load the bases.
“I was very intense and wanted to win,” Centerfielder Jordan exclaimed. “I really liked being at the top of the lineup.”
Briana Young then had her first at bat as a Hawk and singled driving the first two runs for what proved to be the only runs Canyon Lake would need.
“It was awesome,” Catcher Young started when asked about the feeling catching for Romero the first time. “To have her trust in me really helped.”
The Hawks batted through the order and six runs later were out of danger for the remainder of the evening.
Romero pitched a three hitter and started her Senior season in good shape striking out nine Bulldogs while only walking two.
“Feels good and it was my last first game,” Romero started. “I haven’t hit my peak yet, but keeping them to no runs and hitting all my spots really helped.”
To put things in perspective, Romero finished throwing 60 pitches for the game which was the same amount the Marion pitcher had in her first inning.
Romero also had the privilege of having the final hit that finished the game as a mercy ruled decision.
“I got my groove back on my last at bat,” Romero said.
The top of the order was once again the thorn in the paw of the Bulldogs as Jordan and Beseda both singled and were waiting for Romero’s hit to put double figure runs on the scoreboard and sending the Bulldogs to the kennel.
“I was proud of the first inning effort,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “It gave us momentum that set the tone.”
“Missy (Romero) was sharp and hit her spots and (Briana) Young did a great job for catching her first game.”
Canyon Lake will be putting on the gloves again at the Navarro Tournament starting Thursday and ending Saturday with a game that starts at 1pm.
The Hawks will be seasoned with six games over the three day tournament and ready for their next home game next Tuesday against Hays at 6pm.
