The Hawks beat the Eagles on a very windy night of Softball at the Canyon Lake

diamond last Tuesday night.

The wind was relentless as Canyon Lake finally figured out their strategy of winning going away.

Canyon Lake coaxed nine walks with eight hits to finally put enough runs across the plate to ensure the victory.

“It was a solid effort,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “That was probably our best effort for the year.”

Missy Romero had another solid game in the circle giving up three hits and striking out eight.

The Hawks had several key elements transpire during the game that gives you an idea that CL might have turned an important curve.

Hitting:
Cassidy Riccio had something happen during the game that not many fans might not of noticed.

When commenting on how the Luling outfield was backing up when Riccio came to bat, “That was a real good feeling,” Riccio said repeatedly. “That was everything that I wanted based on how my season went last year.”

Freshman Lillie Sander was put in the lineup when the Hawks had some injuries and Sander responded with a good game at the plate.

“I felt accomplished and I did my job,” Sander said confidently. “I was excited about how the game went.”

Sander finished with two hits with her three plate appearances. She was not going to be denied and made good contact with the ball, even when the pitch might have been out of the strike zone.

Briana Young another newbie this season also responded very well for the Hawks. Young walked three times and when she did have a chance to hit, the ball went for a double down the third base line.

“Glad I’m getting to play,” Young said. “My team is behind me and I will do for them what they do for me.”

On commenting on her throw to cut the Eagle player trying to steal, “Amazing!!! The best feeling ever.”

Vicky Henderson took the throw from Young and blocked second base like a pro.

Leigh Weaver who announces for the Hawks had a great line for Briana Young while coming to bat before her double. Young finished when commenting on how she felt after her introduction, “It made me laugh, but it also got me excited to do well at the plate.”

Canyon Lake will now be off to Marion Tournament starting Thursday. Weather might be a factor on how many games the Hawks will be able to get in.

Boerne will be the next home game March 20th so now will be a good time to get out and see a team that might be able to surprise some District 26-3A teams.

Another game where Canyon Lake needed to win convincingly….accomplished.
