Softball: Hawks have Two Game Winning Streak Beat Billies, 7-0

Canyon Lake now has a two game winning streak over Fredericksburg. Repeat: The

Hawks have beaten the Billies in two consecutive games.

Not impressed? Missy Romero pitched a no-hitter in the win.

Not impressed? Hawks offense batted around in the lineup, scoring six runs in one inning.

Not Impressed? The No-Hitter had six outs via strikeout, but the DEFENSE played an exceptional game in the outfield as well as the infield.

Not Impressed? Don’t know what else to say, except the trinity for softball was clicking with offense, defense, and pitching and this trifecta could not of happened at a better time.

Canyon Lake had suffered two losses after opening District 26-3A with a win over Boerne. Then the error bug infected the team as they committed six errors with each loss.

“We were tired of how we had been playing,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “(We) finally came out of our shell and our confidence showed.”

“We worked hard all week and we were tired of losing….great pitching performance and a solid game defensively.”

Give Romero six runs to work with in a game and then you could go to Vegas for the weekend betting on a win.

Romero was not as dominant as she has been in other outings this season, but the added fielding helped pull off this No-Hitter.

“I didn’t know (about the no hitter) until after the game,” Romero brushed back an answer.

Here are some stats that might give you hope as this season continues.

For the 2011 season the Hawks made their maiden run for the playoffs. The information below gives you an idea of where these two teams compare.

Batting Ave.   On Base Percentage     Slugging Percentage
 2011              .283             .342                    .305
 2012              .270             .376                    .352

Getting on base is the key and add a better slugging percentage and you have ways to get momentum. Just cut down on the errors and you can accomplish a multitude of victories, even over old foes that have had the Hawks number in the past.

Last season, Canyon Lake split the series with Fredericksburg and ended up scoring for the first time in the series. A seven game streak of no runs against the Billies.

Now add a six run inning and seven runs total on a Billies team that was clicking and the pendulum can now favor a young yet formidable Hawk team.

Fredericksburg’s Amanda Lochte started the game striking out seven of the first eight Hawks she faced. CL had one base runner the first two innings by a wild pitch strikeout with McKenna Beseda reaching base on the play.

Go back to any game the previous seasons and that formula would of spelled doom for this Softball team.

Then what could be the turning point for this season unfolded in the third inning when Cassidy Riccio reached base off another strikeout when Weinheimer the Billies catcher miss played the pitch allowing Riccio to skirt to first base.

Lilly Sander then started the onslaught with an infield hit and Mary Jordan reached on a fielders choice that allowed all the base runners to safely reach base.

Another fielders choice off of Beseda’s bat plated the first run, leaving the bases loaded and still no outs to show for Fredericksburg poor choice of throwing out Hawks.

“This means a lot  and it was very uplifting,” Sparkplug Beseda said. “We are out for blood for the playoffs and this time we want to win it (playoff game).”

Romero then helped the Hawk’s pitcher (Romero) with a base hit scoring Jordan from third base.

Enter Briana Young who fought off five strikes until she got a hard grounder past the second baseman scoring two more runs and ballooning the run total to four in the inning.

“You have to have confidence when you hit and do your job,” the sage Young said.

“We are learning to trust ourselves, we have the fans and teammates and everything goes back to confidence.”

First baseman LiliMae Daily raced down first base to force an error on first baseman Randon for the Billies. Leaving the Hawks with two runners on base.

By now Lochte was on her way to 56 pitches in the inning when Freshman Kelsey Ahrens skied a ball to the deep leftfield wall for a double scoring the final two runs of the stanza.

A fitting scenario with former catcher Katy Payne in the stands watching the game being the only Hawk to ever have a ball hit over the fence.

Enter the defense for the remainder of this game.

In the next four innings the Billies reached base with one walk and no player getting past first base.

“It is just defense and it is what we need to do,” Short Stop Vicky Henderson scooped. “We can’t get down so we just need to step up…we are obligated to do it (play better defense).”

Fly outs and ground outs were plentiful which is good news when you had 12 errors the previous two games.

“We needed this confidence boost and like Beseda said, ‘out for blood’,” Romero stated. “We have been breaking down our practices and drills. We have worked harder in practices on our mental toughness.”

In the fifth inning Romero hit a rope down the leftfield line for a double with one out. Then with two outs Daily singled, tacking on the extra point in the 7-0 win.

Recap: Wimberley was beaten by Fredericksburg….Wimberley beat Canyon Lake….Canyon Lake beat Fredericksburg. Still a close race for second and third place for those playoffs spots.
Finally: Romero pitches a no-hitter without it being her best game….meaning Great Defense!!
