Zach Henshaw and Alex Kemp Punch Ticket for College
You might have heard of these two players that signed
last Friday at Canyon Lake High School.Alex Kemp and Zach Henshaw took another step for their opportunity to play in College.
Kemp was courted by Mary Hardin Baylor while Henshaw will be up the road at Tarleton State University.
To put these two students in perspective lets run some numbers, just in case you forgot who these two young man were. (The season did end over four months ago)
Alex Kemp was the Defensive End for the Hawks where he finished with the All-Time Record for sacks and a basic disrupter for many of the offenses the Hawks faced in the last two years.
Kemp had 126 total tackles the last two seasons and in his Junior year he amassed nine sacks and 15 tackles for a loss.
Not to be out done, Kemp ended with 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss his Senior campaign. The two totals are now records left for all the under classman to try and top.
The next closest active player in sacks is Isaac Pruna with four. The record holder going into last season was J. Garrett Groom with 10 sacks.
Pruna will have his work cut out for him in the tackles for loss category as he is also the active returning player with eight tackles for a loss. Needing a mere 25 more to tie Kemp’s record of 33.
Zach Henshaw was a record machine that had an extra jump on any player trying to catch him in yardage gained since he played three seasons for the Hawks.
Henshaw had 300 yards rushing in one game, 2070 yards in one year, and 4329 yards in his career.
Those records might be etched in stone based on the likely hood of another player catching any of those records in the near future.
Add five rushing touchdowns in one game, 25 touchdowns last season, and 47 touchdowns by ground for a career and you have a young man that left his impression on a lot of players, coaches, and fans for a long time.
The closest player? How about Eduardo Covarrubias with 947 yards in his last two seasons.
To say that these young man will be missed by the Canyon Lake community would be a huge understatement.
How will the Universities see these young man?
“When he decides to put his mind to something he does very well,” Deborah Frew (Alex’s Mom) said. “He is going
to help win a National Championship for Mary Hardin Baylor.”Wow!! That would endear a community for Alex… “This is a dream of his, he is a very Dedicated. He (Alex) has gone through a lot with the loss of his two Dads and moving to Canyon Lake his Freshman year…there was a reason and being here (CL) and going to Mary Hardin, maybe this was it.”
“Their Coaches (Mary Hardin) were great through this whole process,” Kemp started. “They have great facilities and coaches…I will be playing Defensive End right now and I’m training for Varsity right now, I was one of their top recruits.”
Many of us remember Eric Nelson who will be in his third year next season. Nelson was instrumental for Canyon Lake reaching the playoffs in their second year of Varsity sports.
“Eric (Nelson) was my host when I went to visit and it was good to know someone…he told me the way it was and it paid off in the end.”
Alex Kemp will continue his school work in Petroleum Engineering but might also just start by just being an Undecided major, until he can get his feet wet.
Zach Henshaw has been well documented through the last three years by this website as well as the Hilltop Reporter Newspaper that ceased over a year ago.
The ReSporter asked this young man a few different questions that most of us might not know.
On what he does during his off time? “I don’t watch a lot of T.V. so I work out and lift,” Henshaw contributed. “I do like karaoke and not just the regular way…I like to break out dancing.”
Sherri Henshaw did have some Mom words for her son,
“I’m just excited and a proud Mom and I thank God everyday and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will be for him.”Sherri continued, “I expect huge things and he has never been a problem…(maybe every now and then).”
Ashley Henshaw, Zach’s sister also volunteered some words of wisdom of her hope and dreams for her brother, “We are like best friends and I’m glad football is not over for him. I could not imagine (football) being over and now I will need to go and buy some purple clothes.”
“It will be sad he will live so far away,” Ashley closed. “But we (Mom) will be going to as many games as we can.”
The ReSporter will always remember the first interview with Zach and his unashamed Love for his Lord.
Both of these young man have been a pleasure to get to know as people.
The Coaches mentioned their dedication in the Class Room and how they handle themselves outside the walls of school.
Coach Levi Montgomery said it best when he closed, “I don’t think the two schools realize what they have gotten with these two students.”
Complete your race and never take your eyes off the finish line and always keep your focus. Good Luck!!
