CL Boy’s Track & Field District Breakdown
After evaluating six events for Sprints and Distance the District Scores so far are in
Fredericksburg favor.
The distance runs helped the Billies score 51 points worth of separation for the rest of the district teams.
At our last writing the District 26-3A race was as follows:
91 Fredericksburg
39 Canyon Lake
20 Boerne
15 Bandera
12 Wimberley
3 Navarro
Now this writing will concentrate on the Hurdles and Field events.
There will be eight events for this breakdown.
110 Meter Hurdles:
Navarro’s Miricle has the best time (15.56) for this run. Fredericksburg will once again dominate as they have the second, fifth, and six best times.
Boerne has the third and fourth best times. This will have three teams that can score for these hurdles.
Canyon Lake has the seventh and eighth best times and could make an appearance, but something would have to befall another runner to place.
300 Meter Hurdles:
Fredericksburg has a chance to sweep this event as they presently have the top three times. This would give the Billies a chance for 24 points if this holds.
Elliott and Finn tied in their last meet in Marble Falls with identical 41.75 runs.
Canyon Lake does have some possible points in the name of Chandler Faulkner coming in with 42.88 time two weeks ago in the Tiger Relays.
High Jump
Canyon Lake’s Jordan Anderson has this event by five inches. First place at the UIL last season was a 6’4” jump from a Liberty Hill athlete.
That gives Anderson some rarified chances in the event. Before you can start planning the parade…Todd Pippin with the Hawks also had a best of 6’4” last season and did not have an invitation to that meet.
The point is that one ‘bad’ day can seal a fate of not being able to realize a chance to compete for the ultimate goal.
However for this District Meet, your best challenger has had one jump of 6’, then you realize Anderson has a good chance of qualifying for the Regional Meet.
Another Hawk, Mike Sheffield, also has a chance of going to Corpus if he can hit or exceed his best of a 5’8” jump.
Boerne will have the best chance of foiling that high with two athletes with the same height.
This would be a don’t miss event to see a Canyon Lake young man with a chance of competing and winning State.
Long Jump:
Anderson once again has the best jump when he soared for 21 feet in the frigid weather in Kerrville earlier last month.
That jump has Anderson in a comfortable place as the other Long Jumper’s having their best effort over a month ago.
Canyon Lake’s Shane Relkin had a 19’7” jump at the Blanco Meet, but he also is on the Junior Varsity team. So that will allow some different point totals for this event. Relkin’s jump has him placed at second place among all district participants.
Triple Jump:
This event will be dominated by Navarro. The Bowles brothers have this event in their back pocket.
You might want to get a good seat for this competition, as Gage Bowles placed in the State Meet last year. He has upped that meet by another two feet and with his brother also over 44 feet jumps, the two brothers can share a bed at the State Meet next month.
Canyon Lake has two jumpers with a chance to score points for the Hawks.
Luke Curry and Branson Belcher have both jumped in the 38 feet and longer which would put them with a chance to get up to a third place finish.
Shot Put:
Kothmann (Wimberley) and Daniels (Boerne) are the athletes to beat with the Shot Put. Both students have throws over 46 feet.
Canyon Lake will put their hopes on Senior Jaaz McNair who is one of those 44 feet and longer athletes.
McNair’s throw is also a CL best that was performed at the Tiger Relays two weeks ago.
Discus:
Canyon Lake’s Taylor Hocutt has been right at the 130 feet marker and has had throws much longer in practice.
If Hocutt can get a good throw in during district competition, then the Hawks will use all the points at this point.
Another Hawk, Thomas Gregory is also close with a throw 125’10” which could also help the Hawk cause for this event.
Tomlinson (Billies) will be the odds on favorite, as his throw is 16 feet better than the competitors.
The rest of the battle will be for second and third place.
Pole Vault:
One of the hardest and demanding events in track would be this event.
You have to have speed, agility, upper and lower body strength, and you also have to be crazy. Not to mention….Focus.
Canyon Lake will have a chance to get Marcus Bolles (13’0”) and Christian Dittman (12’6”) with some major points.
Navarro’s Jaroszewski has a 14’ vault at the Panther Relays back in February.
Kelley (Wimberley), Young (Bandera), and Grona (Fredericksburg) all have jumps of 13 feet.
The key to this event will be the amount of scratches the athletes have as they continue to climb higher up the pole.
The best State Vault last season was 14 feet which would give Bolles an outside chance of advancing to State.
Once again, the toughest event, is also the hardest to predict, but the Hawks do have a chance for some major damage…this will be a good event to watch.
