Girl’s Track & Field Breakdown: Field Events

The Field event has a lot of possibilities for some 26-3A Athletes to have a chance

to compete in the highest of venues. UIL State Meet in Austin will entertain all the qualifiers from four different regions around the Great State!

As we go over the next group of events, please take note of some exceptional athletes that have height and distances.

If you have missed any of these articles, you can go back in time and find how the Sprints, Hurdles, and Distance Events will pan out as Canyon Lake prepares to meet the other five District schools at Hawk Cinders this next week.

These articles are detail information on how these students have competed over the last seven weeks and how they stack up against there district counterparts.

The ReSporter hopes you are enjoying these Break Downs. Now for our Field Events Athletes.

SHOT PUT:

Harris (Boerne) has a throw of over 38 feet and that distance has a chance of allowing this young lady a chance to compete in State. V. Vrana and K. Vrana (Navarro) will give Harris a throw for her money. Both of these athletes are within a foot of her best.

Canyon Lake has Kaelin Simmons who has the advantage of throwing on her home turf. This might give her a chance to break into the top three. Simmons will be holding off two Fredericksburg girls as this event has just six feet separating the first through sixth competitors.

DISCUS:

Harris (Boerne) once again is certainly the class of this event. Her throw of 129’4” is over 21 feet better than any other student.

In fact, the throw above would of placed her in fourth place at the State Track Meet last season. This might be someone you will want to see compete.

K. Vrana (Navarro) will try to scare Harris, but a second place might be her best chance as she is seven feet better than the field.

Simmons with Canyon Lake is on the outskirts on the discus and would have to improve five to six feet to give her a chance of scoring points for her alma mater.

LONG JUMP:

Walker (Wimberley) has a jump that would also place her in the fifth spot on last years State Meet. Walker will be the favorite as she has more than a foot advantage.

Canyon Lake’s Marisa Ellis is the only Hawk with a chance for points. However, this is not an event that is her favorite, so she might forgo this jump and concentrate on the triple jump.

This event has very few jumps that were performed recently which would open the competition up and make this an anything goes event for the schools.

But at this writing Singleton (Billies) had her jump the end of March, so she could sneak in as the winner. Walker’s jump was in February, which would indicate an injury or all her other jumps have not equaled that effort.

TRIPLE JUMP:

Marisa Ellis (36’6”) the three star athlete for the Hawks is head and shoulders over much of her field. The jump of over 36 feet would have her right on the outside of points in Austin.

This season, The ReSporter has only seen girls from larger schools with a better jump. This would be a great chance to see a Canyon Lake student compete for a Region bid and hopefully getting to State.

This, like any field event, is very fluid. The State Meet two years ago, Ellis would of has a jump that would place her in third place and only five inches from second.

Looking at past State results, it would indicate that Ellis would need to improve at least one more foot to give her a chance for the No. 1 distance.

HIGH JUMP:

Marisa Ellis is once again in the hunt for another district first place, but more importantly a chance for higher goals.

Ellis does have some close jumps from Riley (Wimberley) with a 5’2” height. That jump was the first week of the track season, so either she is consistently at that level or has regressed a little as the season has progressed.

To put Ellis’ jump in perspective, the last two years, her jumps would of placed fourth in 2009, sixth place in 2010, and last year a seventh place.

An extra inch would put Ellis in points in all the Meets and in some cases at second based on how many faults she had getting to that level.

Another can’t miss for the CL fans.

POLE VAULT:

This event will have another athlete with a good chance of competing in Austin.

Long (Wimberley) is over three feet better than the next district foe. Her 12’3” vault will have her in the ring for a chance to bring home a first place.

This will be another chance to catch a superlative athlete in District 26-3A schools.
