Canyon Lake Senior Recognition

Senior Missy Romero

recognizing three Seniors that were covered by this website.

Last Thursday night, Canyon Lake Coaches announced their winners at a Banquet for the Track, Baseball, Golf, and Softball teams during the spring awards night.

Missy Romero, Matt Magness, and Zach Henshaw were the three students recognized by their Coaches as Seniors that were the outstanding athlete for this academic year.

Missy Romero literally kept the Softball program in the circle the past four years.

Softball was one of the last team sports to make the playoffs last season, when they not only qualified for the playoffs, but was the first team to ever finish second in District competition.

Romero has set the standard for CL Softball for years to come, as she signed on with Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi before the season was in full gear.

She averaged over a strike out per inning during her career while leading the team in batting and fielding during her playing days.

Volleyball was the other sport Romero had fun playing for Canyon Lake as both sports help balance her time with competitive sports throughout the year.

The ReSporter will miss her candid interviews and smile no matter the outcome at the end of each contest.

Next year will be weird seeing someone else in the circle, but we hope her next phase goes well and that her grace continues to shine bright.

Matt Magness 'has shoes' will travel, 55 yards for Touchdown

Matt Magness was a football, basketball and tennis player this year, but he has also run track in previous seasons.

Magness was a split end, punter, and defensive back for the Hawks as well as being a leader for the basketball team.

The football team lost one of their best receivers, even when he doesn’t have both shoes on. It was a game with Luling two years ago when Magness caught a pass for 88 yards (record for longest pass play) for a touchdown while losing a shoe on his route.

Basketball also had a love affair with Magness as he finished in the top three of almost every stat category for this sport.

This will be another student that Canyon Lake will find hard to replace as he carried himself with respect for the games he played while leaving each field of play with nothing left in his tank.

Zach Henshaw would of wanted his offensive line to share in this award for him.

This young man will always be a player that balanced out the offense with his running skills.

Head Coach Matt Monzingo told the ReSporter before the 2009 season

when asked about the running game the year before, “We did not have a running game last year (2008).”

To a Coach, Henshaw was always admonished on how hard he had prepared himself for the season. His stats will be hard for anyone to top since he started his days in the backfield as a Sophomore.

Having three years did not hurt, but Henshaw excelled in giving much more than was asked.

Henshaw finished his career in Corpus Christi running in three relays that qualified for Regionals.

The ReSporter will always remember Henshaw’s love for God and family. He will be running this year for Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

These three young people gave all they had for the Hawks during their high school careers and I’m sure that each one would say that their awards were only reached based on their teammates they shared the field of play with.

Thank you and all the Senior Athletes for allowing us to enjoy your accomplishments during your days at Canyon Lake.
