Hawks JV come up Short in Loss to Burnet JV, 21-14

Burnet Bulldogs JV came out on fire but the only thing missing for this Bulldog team was a Hydrant.

Yes, the final score was in Burnet’s corner, however this JV team for Canyon Lake was without several players due to being moved up to Varsity and this Hawk team also had sick and injured players that helped deplete this team.

No excuses, because by looking at this game you had to come away impressed with what was shown in the trenches for this Hawk team.

The Burnet JV offense came out with three first downs and in their first four plays and you could see that this Bulldog team might of been playing the Hawks, but all they could see were cats.

This is when this Hawk team started stemming the tide and started showing a whole new approach to this game.

“We adjusted our defensive line,” Defensive Coach Brian Hooper started. “So we started slanting to the strong side or to the side they were running.”

“We were hit in the mouth to start this game, but we came out with a defensive line that gave them (Bulldog offense) to big of a gap,” Hooper closed. “They (Hawk defense) responded well.”

One third of Burnet’s rushing yardage was during those first two drives and Canyon Lake responded by shutting that hydrant off.

“We started doing lots of fakes and set up on that edge so we could blitz their rushing side,” Linebacker Jared Bruckman tackled. “They started trying to adjust to that, but our defensive line stepped up and made the holes.”

Canyon Lake only had one drive in the first quarter and that was a three play and punt series.

Burnet took their second drive to the goal line and looked in control with a 7-0 lead.

The Hawks answered with a 13 play drive covering 57 yards to tie the game up.

A lot of damage was in the form of Dominick Enea from the tailback position on the drive.

“I was getting everything off their linebackers that were shooting the gaps,” Enea started. “I knew the first day of practice (this week) that I would get to start and I looked at this as my time to shine and do what I’ve got to do.”

Enea was also responding to fellow teammate Hayden Dubois was being called up for the varsity game this week.

The Hawks had 22 yards passing and 30 yards via the run on the drive.

With a tied score coming out of halftime, Canyon Lake had first shot starting the second half, when ‘a game of inches’ happened on a pass play.

Quarterback Skyler Tschoepe was throwing a flat pass to the sideline when the receiver tipped the ball right into the hands of a Burnet defensive back with nothing to slow him down but the north wind coming through his face mask.

Canyon Lake responded with another drive to the ‘Dogs 12 yard line when a fourth and eight was a snap over Tschoepe’s head for a 16 yard loss of yardage and downs.

Burnet would score with little less than four minutes in the fourth quarter after driving 53 yards on nothing but running plays.

The Hacks were not finished however, as Tschoepe found Receiver Garhett Grundei for a catch and run of 55 yards, resulting in this Dog having a bark being worse than his bite.

Tschoepe’s 11 completions went to seven different receivers.

“I ran and chopped my feet and the defensive back jumped it,” Grundei said while commenting on this special play. “It was a beautiful pass by Skyler, I could not of placed it any better, and I took it to the house.”

A fourth down conversion for Burnet put the game in the final mode, but not after seeing so much positive vibes from this JV Hawk team.

“What I love about this team is their love for football,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens stated. “They always play up and not down. We did not expect Burnet coming out like they did, but we responded…they have heart, we are not a lot of flash, but we do have a lot of substance and we had a lot of players step up tonight.”

“The feeling inside is a sour taste in my mouth,” Brakeman closed. “But, we gave it all our best and they were just a decent team.”
