Hawks get Water Logged in Loss to La Grange, 34-9

The good news is that there was rain at Hawk Stadium, Friday night as La Grange started a deluge and kept raining on the Hawks through three quarters until they called off the Leopards in the fourth quarter and let Canyon Lake score.

“We have got to work on our psyche,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We need to do some soul searching. We could not move the ball and we need some players to step it up.

This game was not pretty as Canyon Lake had no answers for the La Grange running game and conversely could not find their own running game.

The Leopards came into this game with two straight shut-outs and continued to keep the clamps on Canyon Lake with two first downs and a team that could not sniff the 50 yard line for the first half.

The Hawks finally passed the 50 on their last drive of the evening where they also accumulated five first downs giving them seven for the evening.

Sophomore Hayden Dubios was the workhorse on this drive running 10 of the 12 plays for 74 yards. Dubois finished the night with 86 total rushing yards. The only catch was also made by Dubois, as everything seemed to be all wet.

This drive had Canyon Lake making 77% of their total yardage for the night. Doug Hubnik also orchestrated this drive for the Hawks.

Branson Belcher and Chandler Faulkner both had a good night with their punting game.

Belcher finished with five punts for 40.0 yard average and Faulkner had the last two punts with a very decent 44.5 average.

On the Leopards first drive of the evening, La Grange lost nine yards on a high snap from center and then a five yard penalty. These two plays backed them up and needing 19 yards for a first down on the Hawks 24 yard line.

This fourth down touchdown pass seemed to take all the air out of the Hawks water balloon and no spark was found anywhere to get CL back into the game.

Canyon Lake had the ball four times in the first half and were able to garner 30 yards of offense.

Nothing worked but the Canyon Lake punt and La Grange seemed to be content in not having any return man on those plays.

Now the Hawks will have an off week as they prepare for District 27-3A which will begin in earnest in two weeks, when Canyon Lake will go on the road to Fredericksburg.

“It’s all of us,” Coach Drum said. “Coaches and players, we’ve got to find out what clicks.”

Hopefully this time will give Canyon Lake time to find some missing links.
