CL Freshman Lose to Somerset, 20-8

Canyon Lake’s Freshman squad started the game on fire, but the Sun got hotter and welted this Hawk team as they melted away in the final half losing, 20-8 at Somerset last Thursday. The 5:00 pm start had the temperatures in the triple digits.

The first score was set up by a great punt return by Matthew Adams for 36 yards. This play allowed Canyon Lake to set up shop on Somerset’s 34 yard line.

A Joseph Arredondo pass to Gordon McCleary for 10 yards and with 22 yards rushing from Cody Davis helped Arredondo to sneak it in from the one yard line.

Arredondo found Zach Gregory for the two point conversion and with the second quarter just getting started the visitors had an 8-0 lead.

The Hawks defensive five quarter scoreless streak was a thing of the past when Somerset answered with a 70 yard pass play to Villareal on their next possession.

Villareal was really all the Bulldogs would need for this game as he snatched an interception on the first play of the second half,  going untouched for their go ahead touchdown.

That same player answered the bell again in the fourth quarter with a 36 yard touchdown pass that put the game away.

Canyon Lake had an decent stat line for this game, but the heat sapped stamina and was just not there for this Hawk team.

Arredondo did have a couple of great fourth down runs to keep drives alive as he set up for punting duties. When he did punt he sailed it for 44 yards to pin the Bulldogs in their back yard.

For the year Arredondo has a 44.5 yard average which would be better than 70 percent of football teams around the state.

Take away the interception miscue and Canyon Lake still would of been in a position to stage a comeback.

Somerset was successful on an onside kick after their final touchdown allowing the home team to milk the clock and giving CL precious little time to threaten with enough clock to work any magic.

This Hawk defense is still playing at a high level as the last two teams are averaging 106 yards total offense and just 63 yards rushing on two yards per carry. Pretty impressive numbers for this Freshman Team.

CL Freshman will be putting on the helmet next week at Home against La Vernia, come and watch the future of Canyon Lake.
