CL Volleyball District 27-3A Rundown
Canyon Lake’s Volleyball team will start playing for keeps this Friday at the Hawk gym, when Wimberley comes to town to start District 27-3A competition.
This year looks like a District that will be tough for every game. Literally there are not any weak links or gimme games to be had.
How can you come to this conclusion? Not one team has a losing record coming into the season openers. Each team has played over 20 games up to this point and there are a lot of comparisons you can run to see how the teams will stack up against each other.
Canyon Lake can certainly have a say in this season’s final placing in district and this team looks like a better team than last year’s club. This could be a season where the bottom three in district could of made the playoffs last season.
The ReSporter would like to give you an idea of each school and an idea of what might be in store for this round robin of games.
Season Records as of 9.17.12
Standings W L Pct. Boerne 21 2 .913 Wimberley 20 8 .714 Navarro 19 9 .679 Bandera 16 11 .593 Fredericksburg 17 14 .548 Canyon Lake Hawks 14 12 .538
Boerne Greyhounds will be our first team to go over. First, losing just two games no matter the competition is commendable. Some of the wins that are impressive would be Medina Valley which is a 4A school with a 16-11 record.
Another good comparable game would be Llano. Boerne beat the Yellowjackets 3-0 earlier this season. Llano has played several District 27-3A teams.
Those results: Fredericksburg Beat Llano 3 0 Llano Beat Bandera 3 1 Llano Beat CL Hawks 3 2
Boerne also beat Bandera which is in the same district and that counts for something. The two losses were to SA Holmes and Boerne Geneva. Holmes is 5A school and Geneva won TAPPS Class A division for State last season. Boerne did play Geneva again and won the second go around.
Tough team and certainly one of the favorites to place in the top three in district play.
Fredericksburg would also be a strong contender with a 17-14 record, why? The Billies looked to have played a tougher schedule. They have losses with several higher classed schools.
A sample: Round Rock Cedar Ridge Lost Dripping Springs Lost Austin Anderson Lost La Vernia Lost but won one game in this match Alamo Heights Lost also won a game in their match SA Reagan Lost SA Clark Lost Round Rock Westwood Lost SA Madison Lost
You get the idea, this club played in some tough tournaments in San Antonio and Austin and even though they lost several games, it was not because they were playing a patsy schedule.
Wimberley…what can you say about a team that has won District 27-3A several times these past few years.
Their 20-8 record certainly tells you they are capable of running the table again this season.
Liberty Hill game was won by Wimberley, 2-1 in the Hays tournament last week. Canyon Lake also started this year’s season with a win over Liberty Hill, 3-2.
Liberty Hill also beat Fredericksburg, 3-1 three days later. This gives Hawk fans an idea of how they will be able to compete against these mainstays in district.
One of the hardest teams to read will be Navarro because many of their games are against teams that don’t play schools in this area.
One signature win for this Panthers club was against Poth early this season. Poth has been a powerhouse program these past few years. Poth beat Wimberley during one of their tournaments and so you can see this Navarro team will be a hand full.
Bandera Bulldogs have two losses to district foes this season, one to Canyon Lake and the other came against Boerne. Does that mean they will be a pushover in district games? Not likely.
However of all the teams that have played this year, this one comparison would be the most damaging. Bandera plays a lot of teams south of I-10 and so that would be much like trying to compare teams playing Navarro.
Hard to do.
So, what does this mean for Canyon Lake? The Hawks have had some consistency problems this season.
Impressive wins followed by puzzling losses. This points out that getting on a roll will be paramount on how this season has the potential of finishing.
The Hawks are a young team, but they also have a lot of height and will be able to cause some problems for any team on any given night.
Canyon Lake’s schedule has the teams that always have made the playoffs right out of the cannon. Then the Hawks are gone for an extended period of games. Look below:
The District 27-3A schedule is a joke this season:
Bandera plays at home and away throughout district play.
Navarro schedule mirrors Bandera with alternating home and away games.
Wimberley plays their fist three games on the road and then gets the next five games all at home.
Fredericksburg plays two games away and two games at home through most of their district season.
Boerne starts district with three home games and then goes on the road for five games in a row.
Canyon Lake plays their first two games at home, against two teams that have made the playoffs each year and then goes on the road for five games in a row. Ending with the last three games at home.
That is a schedule that does not favor Canyon Lake and seems to play ok with the other schools.
The end result is every one plays each school away and at home, but playing five consecutive away games just doesn’t seem fair no matter how that coin falls.
Can Canyon Lake get a playoff spot? Yes, this is a deep team with lots of playmakers and this team seemed to not let up throughout this Summer and will not want to go out without a fight.
Yes, this district is tough from top to bottom, but you can safely say that Canyon Lake is one of those tougher teams and they certainly have a chance to have some T-Shirts made at the end of district play.
Now go get ’em….
