Coaches Corner: The Drum Beat

ReSporter: Coach Drum, what are your goals as you face a

Head Coach Charley Drum

more wide open offense in Burnet this week?

Coach Drum: “We need to defend the run and pass equally well and play a complete game. Burnet will be a more open offense and so we will need to tackle in space and also being able to open field tackle will be huge.”

ReSporter: What would you consider a good outcome to this Friday’s game?

Coach Drum: “Playing fundamentally sound football in all three phases of the game, offensively, defensively and special teams. Our biggest would be to finish someone off with our offense.
For the defense, we need to stress in making that last stop, especially when the game depends on it.”

ReSporter: Yes, that last drive was important for the outcome being in our favor. Do defenses really get tired before an offense during a game?

Coach Drum: “It depends on what type of a game your playing…if you are playing a no huddle offense or if the offense is subbing more to get different packages.
We need the defense to know that they not only need to focus but that we need twice the focus when the outcome is being decided.”

ReSporter: So, are you saying that a defense might sub less than an offensive unit, therefore allowing them to tire more quickly?

Coach Drum: “There is a fine line on what you sub for on defense, there are pros and cons, does the player you bring in tackle better than the more tired player you want to rest. You have to make sure you sub for the right reasons.”

ReSporter: You have had to do some switching with players and positions…

Coach Drum: “We found out some kids who haven’t played much got some important reps in our last game. That is a positive we can take from that as these are the games that getting other players in helps in the long run. Coach Monzingo and I scheduled tougher opponents during this time of the season because we learned last year that it is better to finish district with a better record than the games before district.”

ReSporter: What are three keys for your game this week?

Coach Drum: “Develop depth, stay healthy, and hope their confidence grows. There are two seasons and we need to be all geared up for that first district game.”
