Mountain Valley 7th Grade Tame the SAC Lions, 30-14
Mountain Valley Seventh Grade beat SAC Eagles last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium 30-14 for their second win of the season.
The game did take a wake up call from a 73 yard kick-off return by Cruz Flores that got the Hawks going on the right track. And when that happened this MV team showed they were ready to tame these Lions from San Antonio.
With time running out in the first half, SAC drove 69 yards in five plays that put the Lions up by a touchdown. The major damage was a pinball run from Zach Zinsmyer from 48 yards out and the score.
Mountain Valley proceeded with an answer with a nifty right up the middle kick-off return from Flores and a quick answer of 12 seconds to put this Hawk team on the board.
“I was just trying to find an open hole,” Kick returner Flores started. “I had to make up for the mistake I made earlier in the game.”
This young player might need to make more mistakes so he can do more electrifying feats in future games too.
The proverbial dam had been broken with this run as Mountain Valley seemed to gather steam for another great win.
“Big plays give you momentum,” Coach Brandon Pawelek said. “The defense got a couple of stops and then we had the big plays on offense.”
How about a 69 yard run from Quarterback Will Joyner on a tight rope down the sideline with the ultimate goal of scoring and stretching the lead to a comfortable 26 points in the fourth quarter.
“We haven’t had kids do that in the 7th grade in a while,” Coach Pawelek finished.
“I think we had a good game,” Joyner said joyfully. “The line got a lot better, but I still need to work on my passing game.”
Joyner handled his interview much like he handled the game, he knew who to give the ball to and made the best of his situation. Giving kudos to the line will only pay dividends as this season continues.
Steady running from Micah St John also helped in beating down on this SAC club as the game continued into the fourth quarter.
To start the game SAC had three possessions with not very good results. A total of 12 plays for only three yards.
The Hawk defense was not being fooled by this group of Lions as they seemed relegated to their cage.
Flores set up the second score with a 25 yard punt return. SAC’s punt went 22 yards and MV would set up shop on the Lions 46 yard line.
When asked about what he thinks about on special teams, Flores said with resolve, “I like the feeling of touching the ball and when I get the ball I become a different person.”
Five plays later Joyner was running around the end on a 24 scamper and put the good guys in the lead for the first time 14-8. This drive also had a pass to Flores for 26 yards helping to convert an important fourth and 14 yard play.
Joyner had three runs for a touchdowns. All were explosive plays of 24, 38, and 69 yards.
When asked about goals for this season, Joyner responded, “Go undefeated.”
