Mountain Valley 8th Grade has tie and loss to Burnet
Mountain Valley ‘B’ squad ended up in a stalemate against Burnet Bullpups ‘B’ squad last Thursday in the first game of three at Hawk Stadium.
MV’s first drive would be the best chance for a score for both teams, as this Hawk team drove to the Pups five yard line after running out of downs.
The drive had an incredible pass from QB Jackson Neel to Mason Blackburn for a cool 32 yards. Mountain Valley would have another first down to the four yard line when the dreaded penalty help stop a potential scoring opportunity.
“I was just hoping i would catch the ball,” Blackburn said.
This game was more of a defensive battle, witness the points scored and you get the idea. Mountain Valley had Linebacker Chris Hernandez running from the backfield and also plugging holes defensively.
“I was running by instinct,” Hernandez said while commenting about his running style. “I like to play defense better, because it is easier to remember the plays.”
Blackburn was also doing double duty as he did a good job of plugging the middle.
“I did not run to the outside but ran inside which helped everyone on reducing their yardage,” Blackburn finished.
Another defensive player that was wreaking havoc on his opponents was Michael Stirnemann, who thwarted any hope the Bullpups would have for scoring.
Burnet’s longest drive was 32 yards with Stirnemann and the rest MV Defense having a say in this part of their game.
“I have never seen a dog catch a hawk,” Stirnemann said eloquently. “I was there and they were just running towards me…If i see an open hole then I’m going to run to the hole and put my body on the ball.”
No wonder the Bullpups would not be able to make it home in time for dinner.
Mountain View did have one more chance for a win when Neel found Blackburn for another 27 yard pass play to Burnet’s 24 yard line with time running down in the fourth quarter.
A run of four yards to the 20 by Hernandez and then an interception on their next play would end any threat for a team scoring in this match.
Mountain Valley ‘B’ football team will rally together next week when they take their lethal defense into La Grange next week…we hope they get offensive in this game.

Mountain Valley did well everywhere but the scoreboard after Burnet ‘A’ team took advantage of every opportunity winning 33-6 over the Hawks at Hawk stadium last Thursday night.
The MV offense could not get their offense into a consistency that would have a chance of scoring points against Burnet.
Heath McDonough had three completions for 40 yards and then had a nice 10 yard run later in the game.
Losing the turnover game took its toll on the Hawks as that part of the game put a dagger into any type of drive the Hawks would need to stage a comeback.
Quarterback Dylan Compton did have a nifty 69 yard run in the third quarter that put a spark into the team. It was a one play drive as Compton raced to the outside and then ran through a couple of ‘dogs’ on his way to the end zone.
Hawks defense responded holding Burnet to a three play and punt series giving a glimmer of hope for the home team.
Mountain Valley started on their 21 yard line and had a seven play drive to the midfield stripe, only to have an interception thwarting a chance for another score.
Looking at the stats, losing by 27 points would not show up on how close the yardage ended for both teams.
Turnovers were the culprit and hope for another week with better results as MV will travel to La Grange for next weeks game.
