La Vernia will be CL’s next opponent and they will be bringing a very sore defense to the game this week.
This should be a quick game based on how the rush defense for La Vernia was abused by Port Lavaca Calhoun last week.
How about 642 yards of offense by the run. The Sandcrabs had three players with over 100 yards rushing. One of their players had 338 yards on just 23 carries.
Before you get too overconfident, realize that Port Lavaca is a 4A school and that can make stats look very one sided, for a smaller classification.
Canyon Lake won the stat battle last week but that still resulted in a loss on this season’s ledger sheet.
Vince Gill will be the Bears quarterback who has accounted for 67% of La Vernia’s offense after two games.
Landon Richter has 152 yards rushing for a 6.6 yards per carry. While Levi Andrews has 105 yards receiving on four receptions for 26 yards per catch.
So, a La Vernia team with an 0-2 record will be a tough outing for Canyon Lake. A wounded Bear is not a good animal to face and this game has the markings to give the Hawks all they will want.
Even if a 4A school might have better talent, you still can’t discount the amount of yards La Vernia’s opponent garnered last week via the run.
Canyon Lake is coming off a game that was third all-time in rushing real estate. The 324 yards
is only topped by last year’s team in games with Sealy and Austin Travis.
Some dropped passes and penalties on catches would of had Quarterback Branson Belcher with a lot more yardage and a better completion percentage. Canyon Lake needs to prove they can throw it to more than two players.
Daniel Camarillo is certainly starting to inch up the receiving records list. Everytime CL has a chance to get a big down, Daniel and Doug Hubnik certainly will make opposing Coaches being careful not to stack the line trying to stop the run.
Offensively and Defensively, Canyon Lake seems to be operating at a high level this early in the season. Penalties and special teams need to get in line and allow the Hawks to bury a team.
La Vernia will be in the playoffs again this year, so looking at this 0-2 team as an 0-2 team will not serve Canyon Lake well.
The Bears had two touchdowns scored on fumble returns and one was for 88 yards. That is a hard stat to repeat on any given game.
This is the formula for a Hawk victory.
Win the Turnover game and improve your Special Team play. Those two elusive parts of this game will allow the offense and defense a chance to control La Vernia for a three game winning streak.
