Pre/Game: La Grange (3-1) @ Canyon Lake (1-3)
Friday night at Hawk Stadium 7:30pm
History: First game between the two schools.
This Years Games: Hawks 26 Blanco 21 Leopards 36 Marble Falls 56 Hawks 35 Somerset 54 Leopards 46 Columbus 07 Hawks 13 La Vernia 14 Leopards 48 Royal 00 Hawks 31 Burnet 37 Leopards 47 Needville 00
La Grange will be coming into this game with a three game winning streak and this squad has not been scored on in their last two games.
How about 141 points offensively while giving up just one touchdown in their last three games.
Junior running back Rodney Filmore will be a player Canyon Lake will need to focus on in the backfield to keep the Leopards at bay.
The only loss was to a 4A, Marble Falls team to open the season. Record for the three teams beaten by La Grange is 2-10 while the record for the three teams that beat Canyon Lake is 6-6.
La Grange’s linebacker, Kolby Kolek will be the key for CL in the ground game and getting that part of their game in sync after a less than impressive outing last week. Kolek had 124 tackles last season and he will be involved in many plays based on those stats.
The Leopards also has a decent pro-style QB in Logan Venklarek who threw for 1250 yards last season with 14 touchdowns.
Canyon Lake has had two straight opponents that have defensed the Hawks by loading the box and seeing if they can still run the ball effectively. Last week, Burnet started the game in that fashion and the Hawks responded with 300 yards passing that got them back into the game.
The week before, Canyon Lake had some deep balls against La Vernia but just could not finish them off after a fumble on their three yard line that would of sealed a victory.
Good news, is that CL is not as bad as their record and being in such a large State, fans only have that one bit of information to go on basing their projection and worth of a team.
A confident Leopard team with only one loss to a 4A school facing a Hawk team that has only one victory against a 2A school.
Can Canyon Lake eliminate those pesky mistakes at the end of the game? Have they been tutored and taken those lessons to heart?
There are two aspects that need to be answered this Friday night.
Can the Hawks not only score, but can they score when it counts. Last week the offense shut down in the fourth quarter and the week before had a fumble driving for a clinching touchdown.
Defensively, CL had a decent game but gave up a 93 yard drive to La Vernia and a 81 yard drive to Burnet in the fourth quarter.
Those questions will need to be answered and those results will speak on the scoreboard.
This season is now getting close to District 27-3A games and we need to see if lessons learned will translate in the classroom.
Here’s hoping CL has a passing grade. Now get your No. 2 pencils out and let’s get to work.
