Pre/Game: Somerset Bulldogs and Canyon Lake Hawks
SOMERSET @ CANYON LAKE 7:30pm (1-0) (1-0)
History: Somerset leads series, 1-0 2010 Somerset 25 Canyon Lake 24 2nd round playoffs
This Year's Games: Canyon Lake 26 Blanco 21 Somerset 42 SA Lanier 21
The last time these two teams played was two years ago as Canyon Lake fell short with a field goal falling one foot short of the goal post in the second round of playoffs and no time left on the clock.
Somerset Bulldogs are coming off a 42-21 victory over San Antonio Lanier last week and you better get ready for some flying footballs this week.
Sophomore Koy Detmer Jr. will be the signal caller as his name should bring back glimpses of other Detmer’s playing their way into College Football lore.
Detmer started his first game on varsity with 353 yards passing and three receivers catching 15 throws for 232 of those yards.
Three of Detmer’s passes were from 45 yards or more and two passes scored points for the Bulldogs.
Somerset took their foot off the gas pedal in the fourth quarter as they had a 35-7 lead allowing them to coast the rest of the way.
Passing is not the only part of their game though as their running game also amassed 191 yards on 29 carries. That translates to 6.6 yards per carry and with both running and passing a total of 544 yards in the game.
The only part of their game that was off? Three lost fumbles and eight penalties for 91 yards.
Bulldogs that will have to be accounted for: Receiving No Yards TD Justin Guerra 6 110 1 Jay Kalka 5 67 0 Josh Ramos 4 55 0
Rushing Att Yards TD Donaldo Perez 11 89 1 Eden Rodriquez 11 81 2
Of course, this was just one game and not much is known about SA Lanier but they were held to 71 passing and 244 yards on the ground.
Two years ago, Somerset’s achilles heal was their defensive line as Canyon Lake controlled the game in the first half on the ground.
That might also be the ticket for the Hawks this Friday if these tendencies continue.
Somerset had an undefeated Freshman and JV squads last season and those players will supply this Bulldog team with plenty of depth.
Another side note for Canyon Lake is that this team is from a District that the first round of playoffs will be against.
Somerset is the largest school in their district which might mean a repeat game later in the season.
Of course, that is something that is far off but it should not be discounted.
Canyon Lake won their first game over Blanco and in typical fashion the offense looked pretty vanilla. Probably by design as teams will usually not want to show everything out of the box.
The running game was solid with Eduardo Covarrubias and Casey Coffee playing complete games.
Passing game was not used as much as it could be, but the Hawks had almost a new set of players playing at receiver for the first time and that part of the game looks like it could be a fun group of players to watch as the season matures.
Canyon Lake will have to cut down on their mental mistakes against this Somerset team and see if the special teams will show up for this contest.
The good news is that all the players should know where the field of play is and have no excuses for being awol, like last week’s game.
Should be a humdinger.
