Somerset JV Football team get Planted, CL Wins, 26-18

Somerset last Thursday night Bulldogs stadium.
The Hawks started the game with an impressive 70 yard 13 play drive that took a little over six minutes off the clock.
Canyon Lake served a good dose of Running Back Hayden Dubois on this drive as he accounted for 84 yards of real estate by air and run. The two pass plays were back breakers for Somerset with both passes coming from a screen pass.
Dubois was the recipient on both passes of 40 and 12 yards, the final one ending in the endzone.
If you were trying to do the math, then you will notice that Dubois had more yardage than the distance needed to travel for the touchdown. Penalties and one sack for Skyler Tschoepe was the cause for that anomaly.
Canyon Lake struck again when Dayton Dingman blocked a Somerset punt and then had teammate Gavin Rutherford return the punt 20 yards to the Somerset nine yard line.
From there it only took the Hawks two plays to score, when Nick Cahill caught a slant pass over the goal line for what would be a 12 point lead.
Somerset also had some decent returns on kick-offs and helped their cause when they returned the next kick to the Canyon Lake 49 yard line.
The Bulldogs took three running plays with the last one going for 33 yards by Avila. This young man ended the game with 175 yards and was hard to get a hold of for the remainder of this game.
In the second half, Somerset had the ball first and was driving when Shane Relkin intercepted a pass and set up Canyon Lake at their 29 yard line. This interception kept CL in control for this portion of the game.
Once again, this opportunistic team cashed in when they took only three plays to cover 62 yards.
Play One: Dubois 11 yard run that had almost every Bulldog on the field trying to get this young man down.
Play Two: Tschoepe found Josh Devries open for another first down and 23 more yards to the Bulldog 28 yard line.
Play Three: Tschoepe faked every Bulldog with a bone on a string when a fake to Dubois had every Somerset player looking for #22. The result was a wide open sprint to the goal line and a 18-6 lead for the visitors.
“We faked it perfect,” Quarterback Tschoepe said. “We knew they would be playing man coverage and we had the slants working.”
“The offensive line picked it up and because of that and I had no worries in the second half.”
The first play of the fourth quarter had Valdez with Somerset scoring after an impressive 66 yard drive. Canyon Lake hurt themselves several times with costly penalties and on this drive helped the home team with 25 yards coming from that venue.
The score was in doubt now as Somerset had pulled to within six points with all but six seconds of the fourth quarter left to play.
A three and out for CL helped Somerset start their next set of plays being only 61 yards from pay dirt. Avila was the culprit as he accounted for all by five yards of the drive as he left many Hawks just grasping for air.
This score tied the game with 5:21 left in the game at 18 all.
Somerset outsmarted themselves trying an ill-advised onside kick, the play did not go enough yards, allowing Canyon Lake to start on the Bulldog 42 yard line.
CL would find themselves with a third down and needing 15 yards for a first with less than two minutes left on the clock, when Dubois made his appearance once again as he darted 21 yards for the score and then put a cherry on top with a two point conversion.
“Their linebackers were keying on Hayden (Dubois) and they over flooded and Tschoepe hit it hard,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens said with confidence. “We had some sickness and injuries and had to go to a spread offense in the second half.”
Somerset was not finished when they moved to the Hawks 48 yard line and needing eleven yards for a first on a fourth down play.
Defensive End Jordan Weber who was setting up shop in the first half in Somerset’s backfield showed up for the final sale, as he sailed through the defensive line and sacked the Somerset quarterback which sealed the game for Canyon Lake.
“Started off great and then got a little sloppy,” Defensive specialist Weber surmised. “We lined up and just followed the lead…we came back 110%.”
Weber set the stage on the last play, “Coaches had us set up wider which had us lined up a little different, I came in from the back and shot up the gap and their quarterback did not know what to do.”
Somerset quarterback might not of known what to do, but the Canyon Lake fans know what happened. There might be little bulldog flowers growing there by next week if they get any rain.
