Bracken Christian Wins Homecoming Game, 58-0
The Bracken Christian Warriors got to their Homecoming Dance early as they beat SA Lutheran 58-0 with
a Mercy game at Bracken Stadium on Friday night.
The SA Lutheran Mustangs took the opening kick and started the game with a very impressive drive. The Mustangs muffed the kick off and started on their three yard line.
Bracken was licking their chops with this opportunity, but were surprised by a methodical drive down the field. A 12 play drive that churned out 47 yards of real estate and had taken five minutes off the first quarter clock before the Warriors could finally get their bearings and halt the Mustangs at the Warriors 30 yard line.
“We started slow,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields started. “We were looking at a new offense and our defense was lined up incorrectly. We adjusted and then played much better.”
San Antonio Lutheran would not pass the midfield stripe for the rest of the game as Bracken’s defense became opportunistic and stingy.
Those 47 yards on Lutheran’s first drive, was also a high water mark for this Mustang team as the rest of their game went backwards to the tune of -23 yards.
The Defense also scored twice on two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.
Sam Hilgendorf scored Bracken’s last touchdown on one of those pick six, “I was playing the middle of the field and I saw the center go out, their quarterback had a bad pass and it was lucky for me as the ball was like a magnet to my hand.”
Offensively, BCS first five scores were all one play drives. At one time in the second quarter, Bracken had the ball right at two minutes and had 51 points to show for it.
Hilgendorf had his second game taking snaps in the tight offense, “This is a lot of responsibility, but I’m up to the test. Holding snaps for the bonus kick has helped me with the pressure so I’m prepared.”
Mason Anthony, was one of the students that came to the rescue for Bracken when they found themselves with only 11 players and was having to hope each game no one else would be injured. Conner Simmons was the other student that is helping patch up holes for Bracken.
On playing his first game, Anthony said, “I wasn’t nervous and it felt good to hit somebody. I like playing offense better because I like running fast and catching the ball.”
Anthony was a beast on special teams as he was flying down the field and wrecking havoc on the Mustangs.
“Mason (Anthony) reminds me of Jeremy Johnson,” Coach Fields fielded. Johnson played with reckless abandon on the field two years ago during Bracken’s Championship campaign.
Anthony recovered a fumbled kick-off that led to a touchdown and increased the lead to, 51-0. Conner Simmons also had a recovery on another fumbled kick-off, this time on Lutheran’s one yard line.
That is where the Mercy rule would be in acted by BCS when they took a knee for their longest drive, time wise. They held that possession over two minutes while running out the clock. Classy move by your Warriors.
San Antonio Lutheran came to this game with seven players and one had an injury at the end of the first quarter leaving the Mustangs with their allotted six players for the completion of this game.
Passing and rushing was superb for Eli Achilles as he was perfect on this night with three passes and three runs for six scores. That is not counting another touch of the football via an interception that also was taken to the house.
Coy Zunker caught his longest pass at Bracken, with a catch and run for 44 yards, “I was thinking, I just got to score.”
Zunker also commented on what he likes to do better, play offense or defense, “Defense, I would rather hit than be hit.”
“We need to play harder and get better and I’m looking forward to our next game,” Zunker commented like a true student of the game.
Bracken will now continue with their season with two more non-district opponents. Next week BCS will be home again with a game against SA Atonement and then later (second to last game) on a road game in Houston, playing Emery-Weiner.
Now you might see a Bracken team that will be experimenting with different players as they prep for their playoff part of the season.
“Get better,” Coach Fields commented responding to a ‘What do you do from here question’. “At this stage of the season you don’t get better in practice, but you do in the games.”
Learning will be paramount as this team will want to prove that they are for real and bringing their braun and might to the field.
Homework will be due after five more weeks. Then Bracken will be ready for their exams.
