Canyon Lake JV Beat Billies, 21-14

Fredericksburgs Junior Varsity had a perfect play call right off the bat, when on the kick-off, Canyon Lake thought they had the returner with a short return….then a pass laterally to Sammy Studebaker was set up with a wall of blockers.

Result? Seventeen seconds into the game and the Billies had a 7-0 lead and looking at a stunned Hawk team across the field.

All was not lost, however, as this Hawk team proceeded to march 75 yards in 11 plays tying the game with a touchdown.

Seven minutes was worked off the clock and so for comparison sakes:
Fredericksburg had the ball for 17 seconds and a score.
Canyon Lake had the ball for 6:14 seconds and a score.

The Junior Varsity had 30 yards through the air and 40 yards on the ground for their first drive.

Canyon Lake had another chance for a quick score, but an interception stopped a scoring opportunity.

On their first drive, Fredericksburg had three of four plays that gained 36 yards in the opposite direction. Errant snaps were the culprit on two of those plays and one was on a punt.

That was the play that allowed the Hawks to set up shop on the Billies eight yard line, to no avail.

A bend but don’t break defense held Fredericksburg again after a Billies drive that started on their four yard line and ended at the Canyon Lake 16 yard line. Freddie was short by one yard for their fourth down try.

CLJV had another impressive 68 yard drive only to be thwarted by another interception with three minutes remaining in the half.

The half ended all tied up at seven points per team.

Second half had CL with another drive that took five minutes off the clock, but with a Fredericksburg’s only sack of this game stopped the Hawks again.

Canyon Lake had four drives that had 10 or more offensive plays being orchestrated.

This game had a few plays that would be game changers.

1. On Fredericksburg second drive Studebaker had scooted around the corner and seemed to have nothing but green between him and the end zone. Luckily for the Hawks, safety Shane Relkin did not want to see that result, so with a slight angle and a lot of speed, caught Studebaker on the Hawks 19 yard line after the 56 yard run.
This saving tackle ended with the Billies being stopped on this drive four plays later and CL taking over on their 16 yard line.
“We were playing assignment football,” Relkin recounted. “I was on the last line of defense and I just gave it all you can give.”
“He (Relkin) is the type of player that does not know how to give less than 100%,” JV Coach Brian Owens said.

2. Next important play happened when Running Back Dayton Dingman was able to hold onto the ball for a first down on CL’s final scoring drive.
Dingman received the hand off, but you could see that the exchange was not smooth and as he ran towards the line of scrimmage, his hands searching for the ball to get a better handle for his run.
Result? Dingman’s best run of the night for 21 yards that put the Hawks on Fredericksburg’s five yard line. Three plays later, Canyon Lake had their first lead of the night with less than a minute on the clock.

“I had a good block but I could not get a good handle on the ball and I had an adrenaline rush and was anticipating way too much,” Dingman said calmly. “Feels great, but it is not all me, the lineman got their blocks.”

CL controlled the game and had some nice gains passing in this game.

“Our goal for this game was pass to set up the run,” Coach Owens said.

Six different players catching a ball and accounting for 154 yards certainly played out like the Coaches wanted.

“(Skyler Tschoepe) by far his best game,” Coach Owens gloated. “He is so much more mentally tough and he just kept it coming.”

Tschoepe avoided numerous sacks as Fredericksburg seemed to be rushing 20 players per snap.

“They were bringing everyone all night,” QB Tschoepe said hurriedly. “I found holes and escaped. Coach Owens had me working on this all week. I’m suppose to spin out and then find the lanes.”

“This was definitely our best game yet as a team.”
