CL Freshman Fly High over Bulldogs, 32-14

The Canyon Lake Hawks flew all over the Bandera Bulldogs last Thursday night at

Timothy Romero and Zach Gregory weren't in the Dark during the Game!!

Hawk stadium, 32-14.

Two impressive drives to start this game and a heads up play gave all the momentum needed for a convincing win.

The first drive went for 60 yards on 5 carries with damage being done by Running Back Timothy Romero and a pass and run for Robert Woods.

Romero progressed with a longer run on each of his first three carries. Romero went for six yards, 10 yards, and then a final run of pure speed of 27 yards that capped off an impressive start.

Romero started this year as fullback and was moved to tailback after some injuries. “No one stepped up when they we were asked who wanted to do it (move up), so I just raised my hand and said I will do it. They asked who was the faster guy and when I see daylight I just go for it. But much of my yardage came from the line and everyone was doing their job and I just followed them.”

Canyon Lake was not finished, after holding the Bulldogs to a three and out, the Hawks started their next drive on the 27 yard line.

Six plays later, this Hawk team was in control, driving 73 yards in a way that any Bulldog would of been proud.

The Hawks have made some changes in moving players around to help maximize their product on the field.

One of those changes involved moving Zach Gregory from receiver to offensive line. When asked about the difference of positions, Gregory commented, “It is not as much of a change than I thought, I just have different blocking schemes.”

Gregory continued by talking about how on fire this Hawk team started the game, “We were real pumped up before the game, and we just kept that intensity down on the field…we have a motto, ‘Tougher Team Wins it’.”

It was all about the running game for this drive. Cody Davis chipped in with a six yard run, then Joseph Arredondo converted a third down with more than enough yardage running down the sideline for 33 yards. Romero book ended this drive starting with a 17 yarder and capped it off with another 15 yards.

Bandera did finally wake up from their dog house and had a 56 yard drive for their first score. Notes from this drive would be how hard this Bulldog team had to work to acquire that first score.

Fourteen plays resulted in four yards per play and leaving little room for mistakes. That Bandera touchdown made the score, 12-6 and not as easy of a game for this Freshman team.

Bandera was working for another score as time was fleeting away before half.

This drive for the Bulldogs had progressed 32 yards and approaching the 50 yard line when with just seconds left before half, the Bandera quarterback completed a ball in the flat and Defensive Back Mason Montgomery decided to just take the ball away while making a tackle on the ball carrier.

The result was a 46 yard fumble return that deflated all the air from the Bulldogs inflatable bone and a wider margin for halftime, 18-6.

Starting the second half, the Hawk’s defense was helped with a three man sack from Haden Lee, Dylan Hodges, and Zach Gregory that gave Bandera a fourth down and 11.

Punt formation would need to have their punter at least 20 yards behind the center’s snap was way over their punters head and Canyon Lake cashed on for a three yard touchdown drive.

That was the ball game as this Hawk Freshman team seems to be growing up right before our eyes.

Canyon Lake would benefit from another bad punt snap that had the Hawks setting up shop with just two yards needed for another score.

The game ended with 2:21 left on the clock when Bandera had a ball tipped and intercepted by Dylan Bradbury. While making his 36 yard return a Bulldog player was downed on the field and not moving.

Both teams and fans waited and Prayed as emergency units were sent for to render help.

At this writing the prognosis is not know, but talking to Coaches after the game, it was felt this young man was going to be alright.

The ReSporter will have a note later when information comes in to let fans know of how they can Pray for the player.

Somber ending but also knowing that games are fun and many times thanking the Lord for what the Lord might have in store for you trumps this outcome.

Bandera, know you have Canyon Lake’s Prayers!!
