CLJV win second half, 7-0; Lose Game to Texans, 18-7

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity could not rebound in their loss to Wimberley last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium, losing 18-7.

The Hawks offense was AWOL in this loss as the halftime stats would bare out. CL had more penalty yards than offensive yards.

“Staying power is what we are trying to show them and that will build character,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens said. “You don’t measure a man when you are ahead, but when you find yourself in trouble.”

Quarterback Skylar Tschoepe had the Hawks first first down well into the second quarter and that would be the extent of that excitement.

Canyon Lake had 13 offensive plays total in that half while Wimberley almost matched that with their first drive of the game with 12 plays.

Wimberley also had multiple penalties and sometimes decided to have more than one on any given play.

The Texans had 104 yards in penalties while your CL Hawks finished with 116 total offensive yards.

Ok, you get the picture. The second half was much more competitive with a 7-0 Hawk win.

Canyon Lake had 105 yards to Wimberley’s negative nine yards during the second half.

The Hawks forced a fumble right before the start of the fourth quarter on Wimberley’s 38 yard line and Tschoepe scrambled for a 32 yard run on the first play for a first and goal. A run blitz had CL looking at a second and goal on the 11 yard stripe.

Three pass plays with the final throw going four yards to wide receiver Garhett Grundei finally had Canyon Lake on the board.

Wimberley controlled the line of scrimmage, but Canyon Lake did show a decent defense the second half to keep this game within reach.

Next week this Hawk team will be playing in Boerne on a Wednesday night. Games have been moved up with the Varsity playing on TV the next day.

“We can do everything and have our game plan in place by Tuesday,” Coach Owens said in responding to a tight week coming up. “We will get quality reps and sometimes you do better when you don’t have time to think about the game.”
