Hawks Get Caged by Texans, 40-3

Wide Receiver Doug Hubnik on his 22 yard reception to the 5 yard line

Canyon Lake lost the third round of their five round heavy weight bout against Wimberley last Friday at Wimberley Stadium, 40-3.

The Hawks seem to disappear every time a battle with their neighbors just north of CL’s campus have their yearly game.

“We did not match Wimberley’s intensity,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “They have played in a lot of big games and you can see that we just aren’t there.”

Five games and now five losses to the Texans in what seemed to be that same State Championship defense seen last year was in full array on this blustery evening.

Wimberley started this night with a 35 yard drive and were forced to punt after this 10 play drive.

Remember what has been talked about for Canyon Lake to compete with the Texans? Turnovers and Penalties.

Canyon Lake did not have a penalty assessed until the second half, however the same could not be said about the turnover.

First play was a muffed snap for Canyon Lake and a negative 12 yards for a safety.

Canyon Lake chose to let Jake Robinson kick instead of having to punt. Result was a 60 yard kick that sailed over the Texans head and Wimberley would be starting on their 24 yard line.

Two plays and Senior Linebacker Isaac Pruna recovered a fumble for Canyon Lake now having the ball on Wimberley’s 27 yard line.

Branson Belcher then found Doug Hubnik for 22 yards and Canyon Lake had a chance to punch it in from their five yard line.

Three plays with only one yard to show for it, had Robinson back into the game for a 21 yard field goal and a lead that would also be the Hawks last lead of this night.

It was a Wimberley show for the remainder of this game. Canyon Lake had their second worst yardage game with a total of 107 yards.

That was one yard worse than La Grange earlier this season and still way off the Hawks game with Sealy two years ago, when those Hawks were grounded to only 74 yards.

A Bandera game (last week) with 449 yards of offense to 107 yards with Wimberley will make you wonder what happened.

Easy answer, Wimberley has a lock down defense and Bandera will not be in the upper echelon when District 27-3A ends in two weeks.

Canyon Lake will now try to have a short memory as they have a short week of preparation for a Thursday contest in Boerne next week.

The Hawks are playing their last three games with a totally different offense styles with all three opponents.

Wimberley would be considered the balanced offense of the three.

Boerne will be a passing offense. In their win against Bandera (tonight) the Greyhounds passed on 36 plays and so a work out to say the least for CL’s defensive backfield will be upcoming.

Navarro will bring their Slot T offense to Hawk stadium for the final game this season.

What does this do for Canyon Lake now? The Hawks still control their own destiny and District 27-3A is shaping up to be a lot like last season.

Second and third place will be divided up between Boerne, Navarro, and Canyon Lake. And that, so happens to be the Hawks last two opponents.

One of these teams will be watching the playoffs from home and CL had that privilege last year.

“We are in the same predicament as last year,” Coach Drum said. “We need a short memory and getting ready for a game that has playoff implications.”

Short memory in order to get over Wimberley and a long memory for Boerne based on last season’s game when those Greyhounds caught that rabbit.
