Hawks Pound the Bulldogs, 42-7
Hayden Dubois Makes his presence known in win over Bandera
Canyon Lake had their most complete game to date as they pounded the Bandera Bulldogs last Friday night at Hawk stadium, 42-7.
The Hawks finished this game with 35 unanswered points and a suffocating defense. It was the best defensive game in not giving up yards in CL’s history.

“They bought into our non-district schedule,” Head Coach Charley Drum beat. “We still have some things we need to clean up…Penalties and getting our running game into the game earlier.”
This win sets up a battle of unbeaten District 27-3A squads next week in Wimberley.
A slow start was still unavoidable as CL had a 34 yard drive stall on Bandera’s 42 yard line.
Then another stop by the defense and another three play and punt series resulting in another short series of downs. That however would be Canyon Lake’s last punt of the evening.
Bandera had a bad snap on their punt attempt and their player was able to get his kick off for one yard. That play set up CL on the Bulldog’s 39 yard line.
Eduardo Covarrubias responded with six straight running plays for 22 yards. With everyone in the house thinking another Covarrubias run, then was set up by a Branson Belcher boot leg that had nothing but green turf from 17 yards for their first touchdown.
Bandera would answer with a 66 yard drive that featured nothing but running plays. Bandera’s running back Fabian Muniz did most of the damage as he capped off the drive from four yards out tying the score.
A Belcher interception had some Hawk fans feeling anxious, but the Hawk defense matched that turnover with a fumble on Bandera’s next play and 40 yards from another TD.
Five plays and a 20 yard strike to Doug Hubnik gave CL the lead that would not be threatened.
Canyon Lake had six players catch a ball in this game. These games are reminiscent during the 2010 Junior Varsity when Belcher quarterbacked that team to an undefeated season.
Swarming Defense all night long
Receiver Kyler Huff was another player that had a chance to shine, “Feels good, the catch was on the back side and with good communication for us.”
Huff also gave a recap on how the defense wanted to play, “Step on them and not let them up and this week we had a full game where they (opponent) did not get back up.”
Dakota Spear has also been getting more looks from Belcher with two catches and one going down the sideline for 19 yards, “Trying to get open and I was at the right spot at the right time and was able to get open.”
Another four play series for the Bulldogs had Canyon Lake with another chance to score before halftime. This time the dynamic duo of Belcher to Daniel Camarillo struck for 46 yard to the one foot line.
“We knew they were coming with a coverage three, where the corners come in and have a safety to cover,” Camarillo said astutely. “I knew I messed up on the first pass to me when I had my hand in the wrong position to catch that ball…I wanted another chance and got it.”
Covarrubias punched it in for a 21-7 lead going into the locker room.
Canyon Lake has for the first time several running backs with each one having a different style.
“Three quality backs,” Offensive Coordinator Levi Montgomery said. “These three backs can present problems with all three having different running styles.”
Sophomore Hayden Dubois is a crafty runner. “Hayden is a good back with great vision,” Coach Drum said.
“A running back can do nothing without the offensive lineman,” Dubois commented. “You always need to know your surroundings and know how to read your offensive line’s blocks.”
The second half was a total domination for Canyon Lake.
Eduardo Covarrubias sets out for another 100 yard game
Bandera only mustered 26 yards on 22 snaps in this half giving CL a game where they did not have to fret on how the game might be won or lost. That turned out to be 1.2 yards per play and CL doing what needed to be done.
Two interceptions matched the season total which also helped with confidence. Twenty yards passing can also give you some much needed accolades from within as tougher games loom in the Hawks future.
Canyon Lake still will need some cleaning up to do. The Hawks first drive to start the second half was not something you can hang your hat on.
A two play first down that was followed with a holding penalty, two incompletions, and then an interception.
Bandera was only down by two touchdowns and now had the ball on CL’s 23 yard line.
Three running plays for 17 yards and a second and six for a touchdown that would of made this game take on a whole new path.
Enter T.J. Gregory from the Defensive End position blowing up the line and dropping the next running play for a two yard loss. That play gave Bandera a third and eight and stopped a

potential devastating drive.
“First five games, guys did not step up,” Coach Drum said. “Tonight we had kids that stepped up with plays like Gregory and McGuire (Johnson) with turnovers.”
A holding call on a QB touchdown run gave CL more hope as Linebacker McGuire Johnson had his second interception of the year on the seven yard line.
“When on defense we need to get the ball back and everything happens for a reason,” Johnson bellowed. “We needed to buckle down (during that set of plays) and now we are stepping up one by one.”
This game had a Bandera team playing without their leading offensive player, when Michael Miller was injured three weeks ago. The Bulldogs then had to go to a sophomore quarterback.
“We wanted to make him look like a sophomore,” Johnson said poetically.
An eight play 93 yard drive would put the collar on these Bulldogs as Canyon Lake would not let Bandera go for a walk.
How about another 90 yard drive next time out and this time, Sophomore running back Hayden

Dubois would cap it off from seven yards out.
A lot of Coffee on CL’s last drive of the night as Casey helped the Hawks stay awake for a 51 yard drive. Nine running plays with Coffee and Dubois and you would have your final score.
Coffee also had a sack as he doubled playing Defensive End for the first time this season.
“When I came up to tackle, I ripped through him and turned and saw the quarterback,” Coffee spilled out. “I started foaming at the mouth when I saw him so close.”
“That was the first time I have played defensive end since the seventh grade. I think they wanted me playing that position because it would give us more speed.”
Canyon Lake has been crafting and tinkering with many different options throughout this season and this game did look like a more crafted piece of machinery.
“This will be a good confidence builder as we prepare for Wimberley,” Coffee finished. “We did not have team chemistry in the beginning (of the season) and now we are all in the preparation as soon as we get out of the school building.”
“We are coming for them,” Camarillo said in remarking about the upcoming game. “This game gave us a lot of confidence and we got players in that the game that are just as good.”
“District play is going to be a five game heavyweight set,” Coach Drum finished. “We have a hell of a three game stretch coming up.”
