Mtn. Valley 7th A win while B squad loses against Boerne

Coaches and 7th Grade 'A' Team talk after Victory over Boerne

Mountain Valley 7A team whitewashed the Greyhounds from Boerne on Thursday at Hawk Stadium.

The drive was right before halftime when this Hawk team took the ball on their 13 yard line after Caimen McDonough intercepted a Greyhound pass stopping a drive that would of had Boerne drawing first blood.

Mountain Valley set up shop on their 13 yard line and then proceeded to drive 87 yards in 12 plays to take the lead and in so doing taking the air out Boerne’s balloon.

Two passes for 32 yards and eight running plays that covered 55 yards and the touchdown.

The Hawks had 153 total yards and 87 of those yards were on this one drive.

Running back Micah St John had 68 yards rushing and 24 came on this drive, with the final seven ending this set of downs.

“I was able to see the what the defense was doing and then I started doing what the Coaches had taught me,” St John said. “I planted my foot and just went the other way.”

St John was commenting on how he got yardage on one of his runs and made yardage out of a play that could of had a loss on that play.

Defensively MV had several players that were winning the battle in the trenches.

Joseph Crisp was one of those players that had his way with these Greyhounds and continued to come up with big plays and thwarting those advances.

“I just like hitting them and it allows me to get a lot of anger on ’em,” Crisp said crisply. “I run as fast as I can and get them down, you can get them throwing every time.”

With Crisp and the rest of this Hawk team in the Boerne side of the ball their quarterback did not have the time to find his receivers. Hence three interceptions for the good guys.

Mountain Valley had the same number of completions from the Boerne quarterback than their own receivers did.

Besides McDonough interception, Cameron Shaffer and St John also were able to stop drives and keep the ball and controlling the clock.

The St John int helped in setting up the final touchdown when he snatched the ball deep in Boerne’s side of the field, on the 18 yard line.

“I was dropping back and got it (the ball) when I saw the quarterback dropping back,” St John surmised. “Their receiver fell down and the ball came to me.”

MV was able to go that distance in just four plays and increasing the lead to double digits.

Shaffer’s interception was in the fourth quarter and helped in driving this Boerne team into the ground and an eventual win.

Boerne did have one last chance to get the goose eggs off the scoreboard and had the ball on the Hawks eight yard line.

A safety blitz from Cruz Flores made the one yard needed by Boerne for a first down with six yards.

Five yards can kill a drive and that play allowed Mountain Valley to have a coveted victory snap to run out the clock.

—————————————————————–

Mountain Valley 7B squad had a hard time getting any rhythm in their game with Boerne last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

Boerne had this Hawk teams number all night long as this much bigger team made it hard for the smaller Mountain Valley team to tackle and stop these Greyhounds.

The good news is the fight that was shown by this group of players and lessons learned that can be applied with their next opponent.
