The ReSporter will start with the Non-District games first.

Wimberley has played teams with an overall record of 19-16. while Canyon Lake has played teams with a 21-15 slate.

District play has both teams playing teams with 7-7 for Wimberley and CL with 6-8 record.

One common opponent for non-district was La Vernia. CL lost by one point and Wimberley won by two touchdowns.

Going with that theme, Bandera also beat, La Vernia 34-14. That score has already been nixed by those same Bulldogs coming out on the short end with CL and Wimberley by a score that was very similar and both games being at home.

Wimberley won that game scoring 34 unanswered points to start the game, while Canyon Lake ended their game with 35 unanswered points.

That Bandera team was not the same Bulldog team from non-district, in that they were stripped of their best player in their last non-district game. Michael Miller might have been the best player for District 27-3A this year based on his accomplishments before his injury.

Wimberley best victory might have come last week in their win over Navarro on the road. Another game that good teams find a way of winning.

The Texans have two quarterbacks, but Reed Jones has been getting the snaps recently for Wimberley.

Jones is ranked in the top five passing QB’s in District 27-3A, and his back-up Colton Cerday is fifth. That tells you how weak this District is with passing QBs when two players from the same team can occupy two spots for passing yards.

Combining those two quarterbacks and you have 1112 yards through the passing game.

Bryce Rainwater is their leading receiver with 391 yards on 26 receptions.

Kolby Kelley and Cameron Swisher will also be active in this part of the Texans game with 257 and 180 yards respectfully.

Kelley is also Wimberley’s leading rusher with over 400 yards followed closely by Cameron Morris with right at 300 yards on the ground.

When you put their rushing and passing offense together, then you will have the most balanced team in District 27-3A on offense.

Wimberley will get most of their kudos from the defensive side of the line.

Last week, this Texan team held a powerful Navarro running team to 295 yards on 53 carries. Almost four yards a carry less than their average for the year.

The Defense played so well that Navarro had passing plays that helped them convert third downs. Understand that the Panthers think passing is something you only see with a Punt-Pass-and Kick competition.

Canyon Lake had a coming out party last week in their Bandera game.

The best defensive game since the Hawks started play five years ago. You could say, ‘big deal’, based on Bandera having their best athlete on the sideline.

But how much should you stymie an offense when that happens? With or without Michael Miller, the defense answered the call.

Offensively, CL had their best balanced game this season. Both the pass and run broke the 200 yard barrier in this game and the Hawks also got to the 20 first down marker.

Explosive plays were also even with five for running and passing. (explosive play being 12 yards rushing and 18 yards passing on a play).

What does this Hawk team need in order to break the four year jinx?

1. Turnovers need to be something that you cook in your kitchen with Apples…that part of this game can not show up on Friday night.
2. Penalties need to be curtailed. Canyon Lake has been penalized 46 times for 399 yards. Their opponents, just 27 times for 187 yards of real-estate.
3. Mental aspect of their game has to be different. CL can not go into this game thinking about the past Varsity losses. This Senior squad was the first team to beat Wimberley two years ago at the JV level.

Can the Hawks do it? Of course they can. If those three points can be taken care of above, then their chances of winning are there for the taking.

Wimberley won their last game with almost 200 yards less of offense than Navarro. Stats don’t matter to the Texans because they know how to win regardless of what the stats might say.

Look what happened last season with a Hawk team on a hot streak. Wimberley beat Canyon Lake twice last season and the second loss was not on the field. It was in their heads as they headed to Boerne last year for their next game.

You know what that result had on Canyon Lake last season.
