Hawks End Season in Loss to Navarro, 49-14

Canyon Lake got run over by a Reindeer, yes we know that Navarro’s mascot is a Panther, but the Christmas song seemed nicer than the results incurred Friday night at Hawk Stadium, as the Hawks finished a disappointing season, 49-14.

The Hawks first drive had three runs totaling four yards and one completion for 11, giving CL one first down. That first down would be the only conventional play for the rest of the half. (The other two were recorded on those long TD receptions)

That first down would be CL’s only good impact play for a quarter and a half.

While Navarro would rack up 224 yards and four scores during that span, Canyon Lake was still trying to find it’s footing with six total yards on 12 plays.

The longest run in that stint was for two yards while the Hawks were one for five, with that aforementioned 11 yard pass play being their only first down.

Canyon Lake had lived most of this year trying to convert long third down plays. The result was sporadic at best, especially as this season had matured.

Excitement did come into this contest when facing a 28 point deficit, the Hawks unleashed a bright spot for this season with two long pass plays.

With their next two possessions, Canyon Lake had a 65 (Doug Hubnik) and 67 (Daniel Camarillo) yard pass and runs which brought your Hawks to within just two scores going into halftime.

Hubnik caught his pass with a Navarro defensive player holding on for dear life. The play was on a fourth down.

Camarillo got his reception (67 yards) from Branson Belcher on one play that took all of 13 seconds.

That momentum was quickly squashed, starting the second half by Navarro, with a less than two minute drive covering 56 yards, then after another drive ending with an incompletion, the Panthers made CL pay again when the Panthers went 46 yards on 11 plays putting this game out of reach, 42-14 quickly starting the third quarter.

Navarro scored on their first three possessions of the second half while CL had garnered just 23 yards during that same span of time.

The Hawks last two drives of the year were decent but those little things kept CL out of the end zone and looking at next year after two straight years of no playoffs.

Doug Hubnik and Daniel Camarillo proved all season as long threats on scoring plays.

Those two receivers combined for nine plays that are now in the top 25 longest touchdowns by running or receiving.

They said it:
Head Coach Charley Drum’s Opening Statement: “They are a darn good team (Navarro). I think they are better than Wimberley.”

On how the team did during the second quarter: “I was proud of our kids as they got down early and got back into the game.”

What happens next: “We have some work to do to get back up there (top finishers in District 27-3A), we need to get back to being one of the best three teams in our district.”

Senior Eduardo Covarrubias: “They (Navarro) came out swinging and we could not answer fast enough.”

On what you would like to say to the younger players, “They have to come out swinging next year, this year we were soft and we could not get it done. Watch that #1 (Haden Dubois) next year!”

Senior T. J. Gregory: “I think we were doing good and we then we lost our steam when we got into the season. When district started we came together, but we just could not finish.”

On what you would like to tell the younger players, “Our Sophomores and Juniors have gotten better, they have a lot of potential and with our Coaching staff, I see some pretty good things coming. I will enjoy coming back to see this team play.”

Senior Doug Hubnik on what transpired on his long pass play, “they were playing tight and mixing up their coverage…They were pretty good and they put a safety up top. When I turned the corner their defensive guy was holding my jersey and I just hit his hand off and took off down field.”

On what you would like to part with your teammates, “Cherish every moment, because it goes by fast.”

Senior Casey Coffee: “This team made a lot of mistakes and the younger players need to learn from us and fix it….They can set up a tradition of getting better and better each year.”

The ReSporter wanted to use Casey’s name one more time in a pun like fashion.

Coffee was speechless when asked about his career at Canyon Lake, but one thing is for sure, Coffee stains were left all over the field after his stay at Hawk Stadium.
