CL Hawks Varsity Boy’s, Beat a Lockhart Lion, 55-43
Canyon Lake flew away from the Lockhart Lions, 55-43 last Tuesday night in Lockhart and has now won three of their last four games.
Caleb Kreiger was the difference in this contest as he poured in 35 points, which is a new record for points in one game.
“Caleb played a great game,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “He played within himself and didn’t force too much. He took what they gave him and played to his strengths.”
“He (Caleb) was in attack mode, which is better than him standing outside and shooting threes. I think he did a good job of getting into our offense, and when we do that, Caleb can get some good looks.”
Chapman finished, “The thing I like most about Caleb is the first thing he talked about after the game was getting better on defense. That just shows you the type of kid he is and he is always looking to get better.”
Other contributors were Paul Davis who also made double digit points with 11, while Doug Hubnik finished with 10 assists.
Javier Mendez, Chandler Faulkner, and Luke Curry were asked to guard Lockhart’s best player who is 6’4 and had been averaging 20 points per game this season.
The result was a minuscule two points for this Lion.
“Our defense tonight was tremendous,” Coach Chapman offered. “We asked Javi, Chandler, and Luke to lock down one of the best players we’ve played all year, and they completely took him out of the game. It’s nice to have guys that can match-up with the other team’s best player. It makes it a lot easier to play team defense.”
Chapman closed, “Our defense and rebounding is what is going to have to carry us, and tonight it did.”
Kreiger also had a Canyon Lake Varsity first with a dunk in this game. (Kreiger had a dunk last year on the JV team)
Another factor in this win is seen with a team with only six turnovers which will many times give an offense enough looks at a basket to help in keeping the pressure on their opponents.
The Hawks will continue their week at home in the Canyon Lake Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday.
