BCS Lead Squirts away in Loss to Geneva, 58-56

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Bracken Christian came out on the short end in their water logged contest Friday night in

Davis Scott and Eli Achilles

Boerne, 58-56.

“We beat ourselves,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “I did a poor job of coaching and we could of done better, but I put our kids in situations they could not succeed.”

The Warriors had their chance with the ball in the first quarter having already stopped Boerne Geneva while BCS scored on their first two drives and driving for their third.

On that drive, a pass to Warrior Gunnar Stolhandske fighting for extra yards fumbled and the turnover gave the home team some momentum while stopping another chance for a score.

Bracken also had trouble in the bonus point part of their game, especially when you take into account that the Warriors had more touchdowns in this game and with a few pat’s conversions BCS would of won the game without a problem.

Eight yards from reaching 600 yards of total offense and you get the idea this Warrior team was not hurting on the offensive side of the ball.

Hawks get Water Logged in Loss to La Grange, 34-9

Friday, September 28th, 2012

The good news is that there was rain at Hawk Stadium, Friday night as La Grange started a deluge and kept raining on the Hawks through three quarters until they called off the Leopards in the fourth quarter and let Canyon Lake score.

“We have got to work on our psyche,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We need to do some soul searching. We could not move the ball and we need some players to step it up.

This game was not pretty as Canyon Lake had no answers for the La Grange running game and conversely could not find their own running game.

The Leopards came into this game with two straight shut-outs and continued to keep the clamps on Canyon Lake with two first downs and a team that could not sniff the 50 yard line for the first half.

The Hawks finally passed the 50 on their last drive of the evening where they also accumulated five first downs giving them seven for the evening.

Mountain Valley 8th Hawks, Keep Lions in Cage, 14-0

Friday, September 28th, 2012

The Mountain Valley 8th grade football team forged into the lead and never took their foot off the San Antonio Christian Lions in winning, 14-0 last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

The best of both worlds happened in the first quarter as MV Hawks forced a turnover on their three yard line and then drove 96 yards for their first and what proved to be the only touchdown they would need on this night.

A 35 yard reception by Heath McDonough was the back breaker on this drive as Quarterback Dylan Compton took control behind center to drive the Hawks for the score.

Mountain Valley would put more distance between these two schools in the second quarter when they finished a 6 play 57 yard drive that added the insurance needed to rest easier for the Hawks.

Running back Hayden Reed would start this drive with a 19 yard run and be responsible for 44 of the 57 yards on three carries.

Mountain Valley 7th Grade Tame the SAC Lions, 30-14

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Mountain Valley Seventh Grade beat SAC Eagles last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium 30-14 for their second win of the season.

The game did take a wake up call from a 73 yard kick-off return by Cruz Flores that got the Hawks going on the right track. And when that happened this MV team showed they were ready to tame these Lions from San Antonio.

With time running out in the first half, SAC drove 69 yards in five plays that put the Lions up by a touchdown. The major damage was a pinball run from Zach Zinsmyer from 48 yards out and the score.

Mountain Valley proceeded with an answer with a nifty right up the middle kick-off return from Flores and a quick answer of 12 seconds to put this Hawk team on the board.

“I was just trying to find an open hole,” Kick returner Flores started. “I had to make up for the mistake I made earlier in the game.”

Coaches Corner: Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

The ReSporter:Coach Fields what are you thinking as you approach the

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

biggest game in this regular season?

Coach Fields: “Geneva and Bracken are the only two remaining undefeated schools left in Division I. They are big, strong, and deep. They have two quarterbacks and one of the best receivers I have seen. They are more physical than Sugar Land Logos.”

The ReSporter: I can see by your opening statement that you have been spending some quality time studying for this team. Give us an idea of another team that might help novices like me to understand what is in store for BCS?

Coach Fields: “Abilene Christian (the team that beat BCS last season in the Semis), their defense is very similar and they run a lot of the same techniques.”

The ReSporter: Does their offense remind you of Abilene Christian?

Pre/Game: Bracken (3-0) @ Boerne Geneva (4-0)

Thursday, September 27th, 2012
Friday Night the Game will be at Boerne Geneva. 7:30pm
History: First game between these two schools.
This Year's Games:
BCS 56 Austin Hill Country 06 Geneva 88 Rochelle 44
BCS 66 SL Logos Prep 20 Geneva 53 SA Castle Hills 07
BCS 60 Brenham Christian 12 Geveva 77 Austin Veritas 32
                                  Geneva 39 SA FEAST 06

Six-man football is one of the toughest games to have a legitimate idea on how good opposing teams might be.

Many times you can’t find out much from UIL 2A and 3A schools, much less for teams that represent a much smaller enrollment and then add the vast land in Texas and you have teams that could be facing each other during playoffs that could rival traveling three or four states in the Northeast USA.

One thing we do know about Geneva, they are only 30 miles from Bracken and you can deduce or have a better idea of their strength, but it still is not an exact science.

Another item we know about this Eagle team is their record. They bring an unblemished record and have played an UIL club and beat them handily in Rochelle by 44 points.

This team has played two regulation games while Bracken has mercy ruled their opponents and last week only played 11 minutes before Brenham Christian had to throw in the towel based on not having enough players left after starting the game with nine on their roster.

Pre/Game: La Grange (3-1) @ Canyon Lake (1-3)

Thursday, September 27th, 2012
Friday night at Hawk Stadium 7:30pm
History: First game between the two schools.
This Years Games:
 Hawks 26 Blanco 21 Leopards 36 Marble Falls 56
 Hawks 35 Somerset 54 Leopards 46 Columbus 07
 Hawks 13 La Vernia 14 Leopards 48 Royal 00
 Hawks 31 Burnet 37 Leopards 47 Needville 00

La Grange will be coming into this game with a three game winning streak and this squad has not been scored on in their last two games.

How about 141 points offensively while giving up just one touchdown in their last three games.

Junior running back Rodney Filmore will be a player Canyon Lake will need to focus on in the backfield to keep the Leopards at bay.

The Drum Beat with Coach Drum

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

The ReSporter: Hey Coach Drum, the weather forecast might be calling for rain this Friday.

Head Coach Charley Drum

How will this affect the game if at all?

Coach Drum: “It should not alter our game plan, last week Burnet took away our running game and we switched to passing and we did fine.”

The ReSporter: La Grange has a strong running game, does that play to our strength defensively?

Coach Drum: “I really don’t know what our strength is right now. Yes and no, in the past couple of games we had shut down our opponent’s rushing game, but last week Burnet opened up the field and we had a hard time stopping either one, they (Burnet) took advantage of us in open space.”

Volleyball Varsity lose to Fredericksburg, while CLJV sweep the Billies

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Canyon Lake Volleyball team started too late to catch up to the Billies and lose in three games last

Lillie Sander, Kacee Vrana, and Alexis Robinson pose after Victory over Billies

Tuesday night at Hawk Gym.

The Hawks were down 7-12 in the first game before finally starting to score some rallies against a strong front line for Fredericksburg. In the next five rotations Canyon Lake had crept back to within one point 21-22, before the Billies closed with a 25-21 final score.

The third game was more dramatic as neither team could stretch a lead more than three points. Canyon Lake had this game tied at 23 all, before a service error and then Fredericksburg won with their last serve.

“They (CL Team) need to come up with momentum,” Head Coach Nicole Creek said. “We had too many errors at the end of the game and that just killed us.”
